Self-Advocate of the Year Nomination Form

Stephen Shore once defined self-advocacy as “knowing when and how to approach others to negotiate desired goals, build mutual understanding and trust, and achieve fullfilment and productivity. It often involves an amount of disclosure about oneself to reach the goal of better mutual understanding.”

Do you know someone who fits this description?  If so, nominate them for the Self-Advocate of the Year Award.

Award will be presented at the NE ASD Network Conference at the Thursday evening dinner event at the Younes Conference Center North in Kearney Nebraska April 4th, 2024

Scholarship Application

The Dan Archwamety scholarship was established to give hope, affirmation, and financial assistance to young people on the autism spectrum who plan to continue their schooling after high school.  In collaboration with the Autism Society of Nebraska, the Archwamety family created the scholarship in memory of Dan, who died on June 1, 1997, as a result of a bike-truck accident, shortly after he completed his sophomore year at the University of Nebraska, Kearney.

The scholarship will be presented at the NE ASD Network Conference at the Thursday evening dinner event at the Younes Conference Center North in Kearney Nebraska April 4th, 2024

ASN Legislative Connection

National Updates

The House Ways and Means Committee has passed a $78 billion tax package that includes an expansion of child tax credits which were significantly reduced after an expansion during the pandemic. It is uncertain when the Senate will take up the legislation.

The National Health Law Program developed an issue brief that can be accessed here regarding options states have to pay family caregivers for Medicaid home and community-based services and covers limitations and policy considerations. While many families and individuals may want this option not all states are eager to authorize it.

Nebraska Updates

Legislation We Are Following

LB 889- Exempt class III school districts from the prohibition on suspending a student in pre-kindergarten through second grade - Class 3 schools are districts of students from 1 to 499,999 inhabitants.

LB 937- Adopt the Caregiver Tax Credit Act - provides tax credits for 50% of allowable expenses up to $2000 for caregiving expenses for a disabled family member, Limited to those whose income is less than $50,000, or $100,000 for married partners.

LB964- Adopt the Special Education Teacher Forgivable Loan Program Act and provide for scholarships under the Nebraska Career Scholarship Act - Requires the state to provide 25 loans each year to students studying to become special education teachers for up to 5 years of schooling. After graduation students are required to teach in Nebraska for 5 years or the total amount of years they received loans.

LB1007 - Provide for Medicaid Coverage for Certain Blind, Aged, or Disabled Individuals - Allows the state to recognize that those receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are eligible for Medicaid. The state would align with federal determinations of disability status for Medicaid.

LB1016 - Eliminate a termination date relating to prioritization of certain developmental disabilities services - removes the end date of the prioritization of who will receive adult day services if there is not enough funding to support all students requiring day services.’

LB1285 - Create the Supported Employment Task Force - The task force will study barriers in supporting individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in gaining and remaining employed and will provide recommendations to the legislature -and the governor.
