Good Morning-

The following message is sent on behalf of Environmental Health & Safety. Please read the message carefully and in its entirety, as we ensure the safety and education of all of our students in community.

AEDs

The University has installed automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) in the South campus residence halls and the Hearn Plaza residence halls. The remaining residence halls will receive AEDs in 2025. Learn more on the EHS website.

AEDs are most successful when their first shock is delivered within three to four minutes of sudden cardiac arrest onset. Because of this, AEDs are installed in many accessible and visible locations throughout campus. These units are extremely user-friendly and can be used effectively by the layperson.  Any student interested in training should contact James Perrott in Deacon Health at perrotja@wfu.edu.

FIRE SAFETY

FIRST STEPS

  • When you hear a fire alarm, leave the building immediately.
  • Alert others as you leave and ask if they need help.
  • Close doors to slow the spread of fire. Do not lock doors.
  • Do not use elevators unless told to do so by emergency workers.
  • Do not attempt to extinguish a fire yourself if it will put you in danger.

BE AWARE

  • Watch for people who need help, particularly people with limited mobility or physical disabilities.
  • Activate an alarm if told to do so by police or emergency workers.
  • Remain at an emergency assembly point. A head count may be taken, and emergency workers may have additional instructions.
  • Do not go back into a building until firefighters, police or University officials say it is safe.
  • Notify the firefighters if anyone is unaccounted for.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A FIRE SAFETY-RELATED EMERGENCY

  • Know your building’s floor plan. Remember where the stairs, fire extinguishers, and emergency exits are located.
  • If you regularly visit the same location within a building, know exactly how many doors you will pass along your evacuation route before you reach the nearest exit.
  • Exit signs may be obstructed by heavy smoke, so you must know how to find an exit.
