In the pulpit

Sunday, March 3

"Stretching for a New Way," Rev. Linda Hoddy

We will begin this year's Stewardship Campaign on Sunday, March 3. The choir will sing “A New Way” and “‘Tis A Gift to Be Simple,” as well as our traditional “Magic Penny.” We will also hear from one of our young families. This Sunday's sermon will focus on sharing stories of wonderful moments Albany UU has brought to members of the congregation.

Sunday, March 10

"Growing Up and Growing Older," Michael Hornsby

"Growing" is a term which, when applied to human beings, implies not just the process of "becoming", but also the process of transitioning successfully to the next level of human development. We are all subject to the changes brought about by the aging process. Life and its living make these changes inevitable. To live a principled life, Unitarian Universalists must periodically examine the past and the future, in order to better understand the present. Please join us as we listen to your fellow congregants, from among the youngest to age 70, give humanistic testimony regarding loss, aspirations, and their search for truth and meaning.

Help the Stewardship Team Create an Albany UU "Word Cloud"

Visit the Stewardship table in March or fill in the online form to help Albany UU create a word cloud containing all the new ways you can imagine church and what you'd like to see more of that we're currently doing. We'll have the table set up in Channing after the service for 4 weeks starting on Sunday, March 3.

Annika Pfluger will put your imaginations into a word cloud and it will be fun over the next few weeks to see which words flow to the center and are in the largest type. That is a way to gauge the most popular ideas... So stop by when you are in the building or submit your thoughts online via the form at https://fuusa.breezechms.com/form/a10f658983 and let's see what appears in the center.

Organ Maintenance and Feedback

The Ministries and Operations Team (MOT) recently found out that the cost to maintain the custom-built pipe organ in the Sanctuary is out of proportion to the organ's use. If you would like to provide respectful input, or put your creative problem-solving skills to use helping the MOT determine next steps in addressing this issue, please communicate with us via this form by March 11. Thanks so much!

Labeled food contributions can be brought in at any time and put in the refrigerator in the kitchen or chest freezer in the pantry. Hope we see you for breakfast.

Help Sheridan Prep, Help a Child

We know that children are our greatest asset. We also know that we are not providing all children with the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Albany UU has addressed this problem in a small way by adopting our neighborhood public school, Sheridan Preparatory Academy. In the past 13 years, we have volunteered in the classroom, built a playground, purchased a vacant lot, helped with activities, such as the farmer’s market, and provided considerable funds. In addition to our individual contributions, Albany UU has allocated $4,000 in its annual budget for field trips.

Unfortunately, fear of Covid has caused our help to dwindle. The school has suffered during the pandemic: when school was closed, many students did not have access to computers and internet connections to learn successfully at home. In the neighborhood, housing has continued to deteriorate and violence has increased. Many families who can have moved out. Now is the time to volunteer.

There are many ways to help. Many of us enjoy interacting with students in the classroom, helping small groups with reading, math, or science. The playground stencils we painted are fading and need to be re-painted in the spring. We are planning to develop additional outside play and learning space. Both volunteer work and donations will be needed for this project. The school always needs help with special activities, such as recognizing good attendance. Your help with filling these needs will be greatly appreciated. If you want to volunteer or have ideas, please contact Martha Musser at 518-313-9674 or mussermartha@gmail.com.

Unirondack is filling up!

If you're looking for a place for the values we talk about each week to come to life in a real-life community that is centered around a youth experience, check out Camp Unirondack!

Unirondack is a radically-inclusive, UU-founded summer camp located in the beautiful lake-filled Adirondacks on the ancestral lands of the Haudenosaunee. We're currently enrolling for spring and summer programs, and spots are filling up!

At Unirondack we provide a space that holds progressive values, but focuses on providing a space for campers to play, scream, shout, be themselves, and learn about others. Our values create norms, but it's our campers and staff arriving with a focus on creating community who provide an environment of learning and exploration that makes Unirondack special. Whether it's a camper's first time in the outdoors, diving into the fantasy world of a DnD campaign, playing music in front of an audience, or showing off their art, we aim to help youth discover new passions and parts of themselves to love.

Camp Unirondack is hiring!

Are you interested in working at a youth-centered space, surrounded by peers who share a passion for intentional community engagement and social justice work? Have you ever considered working at a summer camp? You should check out Unirondack! Unirondack is a radically-inclusive, UU-founded summer camp located in the beautiful lake-filled Adirondacks on the ancestral lands of the Haudenosaunee. We have been helping create smiles and chaotic fun for decades since 1951!

This summer we are looking for prep cooks, maintenance staff, counselors, and several leadership positions. If interested, check out www.unirondack.org or email Director@unirondack.org for more info. (Unirondack is also a women and trans-led summer camp that leads the summer camp world in gender-inclusivity for youth.)

It is with gratitude and humility that we acknowledge that we are learning, speaking and gathering on the ancestral homelands of the Mohican people who are the indigenous peoples of this land. Despite tremendous hardship in being forced from here, today their community resides in Wisconsin and is known as the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. We pay honor and respect to their ancestors past and present as we commit to building a more inclusive and equitable space for all.
