Welcome to FALL!

YEAH – the 100+ degree days are over and done with, at least for the time being. You never know what Texas weather is in store for us. And even better - we’ve had rain! I don’t know who is happier – me or our native plants and trees.

Why, Oh Why

The Story behind the song!

https://youtu.be/Rs1OjtgIowo

This was a hard month for me to pick a song. First off, we recently had Climate Week and our world has gone through hell during the past months with floods, fires, heat waves and draughts. There is death and destruction everywhere you look. I have a song called Denial that fits right in with this environmental tragedy we are creating for ourselves.

I’ll leave that one for another time and place.

Then there’s the current political upheavals taking place at both the state and federal levels. So far, I’ve found it difficult to put this subject into words without repeating the same hateful language that is currently reported in the media.

I really don’t want to go there either. At least, not today.

Instead, I’ve chosen a song that follows closely behind last month’s song, only this time from a different perspective. This song is all about the search for love and how, for many, it is a difficult journey. It seems our hearts are designed to always long for another heart to join with.

At a higher level, it’s about a world where love is all around us. There are examples everywhere. All we need to do is open our eyes. And yet, too many continue their struggle to find love, especially those who have difficulty loving themselves. Me included.

Please share if you like this song and don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube Channel.

Ricardo Parra

If you remember, I wrote a song called VIOLETA about Violeta Parra, a Chilean songwriter, painter, fabric artist whose life story is featured in a movie entitled Violetta Went to Heaven. I was fortunate to meet with her cousin, Richardo Parra, who is in Austin for library concert tour and a lecture at UT. He will return to Texas in March 2024, and I look forward to the two of us co-writing and recording a song or three. The song, Violeta, was featured in the April 2022 Newsletter. In case you don’t remember the song, here is the link to Violeta: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q5dHsDGDS8.

KD Hill, one of the owners of the Barrow Brewing Company, has asked me to lead an Open Mic every other Thursday and at the Brewery starting at 7:00 PM. I get to meet great area musicians and it gives me a chance to try out different songs, both original and covers. I am also working with Tim Flanagan, the photographer and owner of Solas Gallery, to start up a monthly Song Circle event. The first event is scheduled for October 25th. Songwriters – watch for more information soon.

In case you missed the earlier newsletters, here is a link to the ones we have completed so far this year.
