A Note From Our Executive Director | |
Hi friends!
And just like that, it is 2024! Time flies when you have as much fun as we do at Mount Desert Nursing Association. 2024 is a milestone year for us: we turn 75 years young on September 1st! To celebrate our long history of providing home care in our communities, we will soon be launching our 75th Anniversary Campaign. The goal of this campaign is to strengthen our investment fund to sustain our services for many years to come. We will also be hosting a 75th celebration in July which you won’t want to miss! Lastly, we are excited to accept the challenge of being the sole home health care provider on MDI in the coming year. We are hiring two additional clinicians, so we can serve our growing number of patients. If you or anyone you know is looking to join a small but mighty team and do meaningful work, please reach out to us. We are looking for a full-time occupational therapist (OT) and a full-time registered nurse (RN). Thank you for your continued support, and all the best to you for a healthy and happy 2024!

75 Years of Service
This year, we celebrate 75 years of Mount Desert Nursing Association. But our history goes back even further than that!
The American Red Cross set up operations on Mount Desert Island in the 1920s. In 1931, funds were raised, land donated, and design completed for the house at 12 Summit Road! With its new headquarters, the Red Cross was able to provide more consistent nursing care and act as the “town nurse” through WWI and WWII, until 1948, when the Red Cross changed its mission to a focus on responding to disasters and swimming/life-saving instruction.

Avoiding the Slip!
by Katie Verville, Clinical Manager
According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, approximately 1 million Americans are injured each year due to falling on snow and ice. Common causes of falls include muscle weakness, changes in gait or balance, vision problems, pre-existing medical conditions that limit mobility, conditions that cause dementia, low blood pressure, and the use of an assistive walking device.
Tips:
- Make sure steps and walkways are clear before you walk. Be especially careful if you see wet pavements that could be iced over.
- Use salt and sand on steps, walkways, and driveways.
- Wear sturdy footwear with traction - consider ice grippers for your shoes.
- Use proper equipment - if you typically use a cane, don’t leave it at home. Get a rubber base or an ice pick-like attachment to provide additional traction.
- Avoid carrying items. Wear gloves if necessary to keep hands free for stabilization and balance.
- Take your time - do not hurry while walking outside. Take short steps with your toes pointed slightly outward to maintain a stable base of support.
