IF

by Jo Strausz Rosen

You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. We can also try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud. Do not complain. Make every effort to change things you do not like. If you cannot make a change, change the way you have been thinking. You might find a new solution.”

–Maya Angelou

This quote and others like it are the messages we can send ourselves when we are stuck in a challenging situation over which we feel like we have no control. IF we can discover the cause of our anxiety and consciously work to dissolve it. IF we can do this, anything is possible.

JSL RESIDENTS

GET WILD

More than 40 people, including Prentis and Coville residents and staff, got 'WILD' with some beautiful animals, led by animal handler Nelson Pearson, along with his daughter, Jessica, owners of “Nelson’s Wildlife Safari."

Held in the Prentis Community Room, it was a huge success, with participants getting to interact with a wallaby, chinchilla, an owl, an otter, an armadillo, a Burmese python and a red snake.

Nelson has been in the business for nearly 30 years, and even stayed longer than his scheduled time for the residents. They were thrilled to be able to touch the animals, and Nelson really engaged with them, prompting questions as well.

The atmosphere was one of pure excitement. Resident Ruth thought "Quarantina" the Chinchilla was the “cutest thing” she’d ever seen. Resident Edward thought the event was “wild” and loved all the animals.

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

Sukkah Sensitive

Dedicated in memory of my dear mother-in-law,

whose every word and action exuded sensitivity.

Two young men came to a great spiritual master for an interview hoping to be accepted into his illustrious Torah study hall. The master accepted one but rejected the other. When asked why he had rejected the other young man who was clearly a Torah scholar, the master explained that it had nothing to do with his level of learning. When these two young men approached the study hall, they walked past the area where the sukkah had stood and where the twigs and branches that were used as its covering were still lying on the ground. The master noticed how one young man walked around it and the other walked on top of it.

To the great master, “a heel that had nuanced sensitivity to sanctify (the twigs and branches used for the mitzvah of Sukkah) was greater than a head filled with Torah knowledge.”

This sensitivity doesn’t come on its own, it must be cultivated from a very young age.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
