INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY

Indigenous Peoples' Day celebrates and honors Indigenous American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures, including colonial histories that have caused and continue to cause them harm. Indigenous Peoples' Day is not yet a federally recognized holiday in the US, but was declared a holiday by the City of Dayton for the first time in 2022. celebration and recognition are important, as they write on the blog Native Hope, because "To honor a people empowers them. To honor restores identity. To honor means to tell the authentic story of Native America." Please note events in the Dayton community and here at WSU recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day. | |

Books, poetry, and more will be provided thanks to our fantastic librarians - please stop by to listen and feel encouraged to choose a poem or excerpt to share! Readers can be entered into a raffle for prizes. Refreshments will be provided!

The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) of Greater Dayton's Teen Summit provides high school students with resources and skills that they can utilize to make changes in their school around topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This year, the theme is "Stigma: Overcoming Discrimination and Supporting Healing." Teen Summit will host 20 high schools in the Greater Miami Valley region. The Teen Summit encourages students to build networks of passionate youth leaders in their district. As a group, these leaders build projects to impact their district and community. NCCJ is in need of motivated college volunteers to help facilitate. Facilitators are responsible for leading their assigned group of high school students through the exercises as they work through the curriculum. Volunteer trainings are available October 10 and 12, the Teen Summit is on October 19. Interested volunteers can register using the link above. Door Canvassers will contact Ohioans to provide them with voter education and information surrounding the upcoming November election. Responsibilities include conducting community outreach by knocking doors as well as data collection and management. If you are someone who can commit to 4 hour shifts 3PM-7PM Wednesday-Sunday, this is the position for you. Additional positions as Door Canvasser Team Lead and Virtual Canvassers are also available!
