February Students of the Month

RYAN COWELL

CLASS OF 2024

Senior, Ryan Cowell is a member of National Honor Society, English Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, and Science Honor Society. She is the Drum Major in the Marching Band, a varsity thrower on the Track & Field team in both winter and spring, and a member of both the Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble. One of Ryan’s favorite classes at North is AP Literature. Besides learning a lot from Ms. Fedorko, her class is one of the most welcoming and incredible class environments. Ryan also loves her drawing classes with Ms. Lindaberry. Drawing allows her to explore her creativity in new ways and she has so many resources that allow her to expand her artistic knowledge. Ryan has a part time job at Just Chill in Clinton. She also volunteers with "kids farm days" over the summer at America's Grow-a-Row. Ryan says her years at North have been overwhelmingly eventful in the best way possible. Ryan had many incredible and fun experiences, and North has taught her so much over the past four years. Her favorite memories at North have been from Marching Band season, when the band had practice in the rain. The band members somehow managed to make the best of the situation, even in the very worst of weather conditions. She has the fondest memories of everyone drilling and learning their parts while getting drenched, but still remaining so incredibly positive and having the best time imaginable. Next year, Ryan plans to major in Film and Media Studies, Studio Art, or Creative Writing.

VICKY DU

CLASS OF 2024

Senior, Vicky Du plans to major in Chemical Engineering in college next year. Vicky’s favorite class at North Hunterdon has been AP Chemistry with Mrs. Plaxe. She loves this class because Mrs. Plaxe is lighthearted, funny, and fun to talk to. Vicky is also grateful for the support Mrs. Fedorko, Coach Ruscher, Mr. Gallo, Dr. Kovacs, Ms. Carr, and Mrs. Watson has given her. Vicky is a member of National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, English Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Rho Kappa (history) Honor Society, and National Art Honor Society. She is President of HOSA (Future Health Professionals), an executive officer of Red Cross, Secretary of National Technical Honor Society, and plays on the Varsity Girls Golf Team. Vicky has played the Guzheng for 11 years. She has competed in finals of the 4th and 7th International Zheng Competitions, achieving the bronze and silver award, respectively. Vicky founded and currently teaches guzheng classes where she collaborates with organizations such as AYLUS to bring her students to perform at nursing homes. She has performed at many places, such as Lincoln Center and Mayor Cohen’s Charity Gala. Vicky is a member of the Training Committee for the Red Cross New Jersey Youth Council and volunteers at St. Luke’s. She had a history research paper that won the National History Day Regional Award, a math modeling paper that achieved honorable mention in HiMCM, a summer research project surrounding LCA under the mentorship of Columbia University’s Professor Park, and had an internship at Ohio State University under Dr. L.S. Fan’s chemical looping lab. Vicky’s favorite memory from North was the Diversity Club’s Cultural Day because she enjoyed the different cultural foods with her friends. She says North Hunterdon has been a close community to her that has helped her grow and develop as a person and will always be a place that has resonance in her character.

February Athletes of the Month

GRANT GOLDAN

CLASS OF 2024

Senior, Grant Goldan has wrestled since he was in second grade. Grant performs best at top. He wrestles in the 138 weight class. Grant is excited to perform in the individual district tournament. His season record is 14-15. Last year, Grant placed third in the district tournament. Outside of wrestling, Grant is a member of German Honor Society and Art Honor Society. He likes to surf in his free time. Grant is not planning to wrestle in college next year. He plans to pursue a degree in Marine Biology at either URI, University of Tampa, Coastal Carolina, Eckerd College, or Nova Southeastern University. Grant says his time at North went by quickly. From his first day of wrestling his freshman year to the end of his senior year, time went by very fast. Grant says, other than his own family, the wrestling community he is a part of at North is the closest group of people he knows.

HILAIRE LAVIGNE

CLASS OF 2024

Senior, Hilaire Lavigne has been cheering for 15 years. Hilaire has been cheering competitively for ten of those years. She was part of the Hunterdon Huskies youth cheer program until high school. Hilaire has a lot of strength in stunting. She is a backspot. Recently, the team traveled to Orlando, Florida to compete at UCA Nationals. For their traditional routine, they placed 17th out of 108 teams, and for their game day routine, they placed 13th out of 48 teams. They team also won their Skyland Conference competition for the third year in a row. Outside of cheer, Hilaire is Vice President of North’s Future Business Leaders of America Club. In FBLA, the club helps manage and promote the school spirit store, as well as help manage a social media account in order to help promote student involvement. She is a member of National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society. Hilaire enjoys participating in the Special Olympics and Relay for Life. She volunteered as a trainer for the Special Olympics at North last year and can’t wait to participate again this year. Hilaire had a great time forming bonds and working with athletes with intellectual disabilities to give them a chance to demonstrate their physical fitness and courageous character. She has participated in North Cheer’s “Flip for a Cure” Relay for Life team the past few years, and is excited to participate in Relay for Life with the senior class team this year. Next year, Hilaire is unsure if she will continue her athletic career in college. Her top schools are TCNJ and the University of Delaware. If she ends up attending either school, she will strongly consider cheering there. Hilaire says during the past four years at North, she has been provided with countless opportunities to make new friends, join new clubs, succeed in a team sport, and experience high school with a strong community. For all that, she is very grateful to be a student at North Hunterdon!
