Good hands-on environmental education places something real in a student’s hands. Teachers may use taxidermy or plastic replicas, but expanding an education toolkit beyond yellowed skulls, random bones, and fragile mounts can be tricky. With a little bit of guidance, educators can build inexpensive yet useful natural history collections.

Virtually join Carissa Longo, DCNR - PA State Parks & Susan Gallagher, Carbon County EE Center (CCEEC), for an engaging webinar to gain the skills needed to safely & legally curate, preserve, and care for natural history items in your educator’s toolkit. Discover the magic of using simple household items to preserve specimens, learn about embedding items in acrylic, hear tips on cleaning feathers & bones 🦴, & much more.

This webinar is open to all educators including classroom teachers, naturalists, youth group leaders, homeschoolers, & pre-service teachers. It includes innovative ideas for putting collections to use in inquiry-based teaching and making natural phenomena come to life. The session will not include making any of your own specimens, but all attendees will receive access to a comprehensive Google Drive folder filled with extensive files & resources. Questions? Contact Carissa Longo, NRPS at calongo@pa.gov or 717-772-1807.

Winter ❄ Recreation-Leave No Trace Series

Principle 1: Plan Ahead and Prepare

Winter recreation can be exhilarating! There's something magical about heading out into the cold to help shake off the wintertime blues--especially if there's snow! Before you head out for your activity--be it nature journaling, birding, or snowshoeing, you'll want to plan ahead & prepare. Wintertime activities require a little more planning--dress in warm, comfortable layers, let someone know your plans, bring along a map & compass, and most importantly, pack a thermos in the car with you favorite hot beverage to enjoy after your adventure!

To learn a more about safely recreating in the winter, check out these two additional resources:

Winter ❄ is here! Check out PA State Park's Winter Activity Report before you head to a PA State Park this winter. This weekly report lists snow & ice conditions (including snow & lake ice thickness) for all PA State Parks. The report is searchable by park and by winter outdoor recreation activity 🎿🛷⛸🎣 .
