Assistive Technology, What Is It

and How Do You Pay For It?

Assistive technology is any tool or technology that helps a person complete functional tasks with ease and efficiency. Assistive technology is beneficial for people with disabilities or older adults, but most people use assistive technology every day. Do you wear glasses? Have you ever used a step stool? If you said yes, then you have used assistive technology.

Assistive technology can be low-tech or high-tech, inexpensive, or expensive, something tiny or a large machine. Assistive technology can range from a rubber grip that helps you open a jar to high-tech computers that help people communicate using only their eyes. Read More

Family Life

Lifetime Investment

“Time is the one thing that can never be recovered. One may lose and regain a friend; one may lose and retrieve money; opportunity once spurned may come again, but the hours that are lost in inactivity can never be brought back to be used in gainful pursuits.” C.R. Lawton

According to a new Pew Research Center survey, Americans overwhelmingly view spending time with family as one of the most essential things in their life, far outranking other personal priorities.

4-H and Youth Development

Civically Engaged 4-H Members

Over Presidents' Day weekend, six Sedgwick County 4-H members attended the annual state 4-H event "Citizenship in Action" at the Capitol in Topeka. This event allows youth to have a variety of different experiences. The main part of the weekend involves the exploring and discussion of an active house bill. This year HB 2475 was chosen, which proposes that public school may not begin before the Labor Day holiday. Our 4-H members had strong opinions they were able to explore and share with others from all across the state of Kansas. Sunday evening, they took to the Senate and House floors, borrowing the seats of our elected representatives, to actually discuss, debate, and vote on HB 2475. In the mock vote, the bill failed by a high percentage. We also got to speak with a few of our representatives, discussing the experience with them as well as the 4-H program. Another highlight of the weekend was touring the Capitol building and climbing the steps to the top of the dome. This event is a fantastic opportunity for our youth to learn more about the civic process and grow their leadership skills!
