 HEAR US ROAR!
OAK MIDDLE SCHOOL WEEKLY UPDATE
Academics, Athletics, Activities and the Arts

We are so excited and proud of our very own band director, Mr. Robert Harrell, for being invited to be the guest conductor for the 2024 All-State Junior High Honor Jazz Ensemble this week. Each year the California Alliance for Jazz selects one teacher in the state of California to conduct the honor ensemble, and Mr. Harrell was selected this year. He will be attending the California All-State Music Education Conference (CASMEC) in Sacramento from January 31-February 4, 2024. At the conference, he will be teaching and rehearsing with the students that were selected for the all-state ensemble and will conduct the group in a concert at the conference.

CONGRATULATIONS Mr. Harrell, we are so proud!

SPOTLIGHT ON 6th Grade Aquarium Field Trip:

Our 6th-grade students embarked on an exciting and educational journey to the Long Beach Aquarium, creating lasting memories and enriching their understanding of marine life. A heartfelt thank you goes to our dedicated teachers, Ms. Mo and Mr. Captain, for orchestrating this enriching experience. Their commitment to providing students with engaging and hands-on learning opportunities truly enhances our educational environment. Additionally, we extend our gratitude to the enthusiastic parent volunteers whose support made this trip possible. Together, they contributed to making the visit not only educational but also a source of joy and discovery for our students. We appreciate the collaborative efforts that help make these experiential learning opportunities a reality.

SPOTLIGHT ON STEM I:

6th Grade STEM I students working on their foundational robotics unit. They are building "mazebots" with VEX IQ kits and programming them to navigate a maze autonomously. Next, they will build bots from scratch using the VEX IQ kits making drag racers where they will compete against one another. Their final project will be to build "submits," where they will try and push each other's robots out of an arena.

SPOTLIGHT ON Honor Roll:

We are thrilled to acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding academic achievements of our students who have earned a place on the honor roll with a commendable 3.5 GPA or higher. This recognition is a testament to their unwavering commitment to academic excellence and their dedication to their studies. Achieving such high grades requires diligence, perseverance, and a genuine passion for learning. We commend these students for their exceptional performance and commendable work ethic. Their success not only reflects their individual efforts but also contributes to the overall academic excellence of our school community. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to each student on the honor roll and express our gratitude for their exemplary commitment to learning. Keep up the fantastic work!

The Den

This January, our wellness monthly initiative is cultivating self-regulation and self-awareness. So, what exactly is self-regulation? It is the invaluable life skill of comprehending and navigating behaviors and responses during intense emotions and the various situations life throws your way. This entails building the capability to navigate reactions to powerful emotions such as frustration, excitement, anger, and embarrassment. The Wellness Team has activities and lessons planned to educate and support students on this journey of emotional self-discovery and empowerment as we discuss tools for self-regulation for a balanced and resilient well-being.

This week in the Den:

Monday, January 29th- Mindful Activities at Lunch

Tuesday, January 30th- Vision Board

Wednesday, January 31st- Practicing Positive Self-Talk

Thursday, February 1st- Journal Presentation. Students can learn about journaling and how it helps be a tool for self-regulation and creating self-awareness about themselves.

At Tutorial- Interactive Booklet on Coping Skills. Students can participate in an

interactive game with different scenarios to identify helpful and appropriate coping skills for the situation.

Friday, February 2nd- Journaling. Students can participate in a journaling activity to practice and improve self-awareness.
