STEM(M) AT ST. LUKE'S
The end of the first semester has been very busy for our Biomed students. The Innovations classes created a Ship in a Bottle to learn about placing and removing objects larger than the opening. This was the precursor to building laparoscopic simulators to practice using alligator graspers and other laparoscopic instruments. The Interventions class submitted their 25-page APA field of study research papers. There was an audible sigh of relief on Friday when they turned it in! Their topics range from Radiology to Medical Ethics and more. The Culinary Medicine classes popped amaranth and millet for their homemade granola bars with our very own Mrs. Angie Abel. Mrs. Abel brought their ingredients from the Amish Country, which she visited over the Thanksgiving break. Later they created delicious fried rice and rice noodle dishes under the direction of our guest chef, Adam Korzun, who is the Director of Performance Nutrition for the Green Bay Packers. He oversees all aspects of player nutrition, hydration, and supplementation, and he manages and operates Team Dining and Staff Dining for the organization. One of the Fundamentals classes also visited with our K4 classes to discuss the importance of properly washing hands. Finally, both Fundamentals and Culinary Med classes had a nutrition lesson from Major Abby Steiner (a registered dietician), Staff Sergeant John Sprinkle, and Sergeant First Class David Farnum. The students prepared and ate MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). Most were very surprised at how they tasted and many enjoyed theirs.

ST. LUKE'S THEATER DEPARTMENT WITH GREAT TURNOUT AT STATE
Our theater group recently attended the Walter Trumbauer Festival. This program has provided quality training and performance opportunities for Alabama theater students at the high school level since 1940.
Students qualify for the state competition by earning a rating of “superior” at one of seven district festivals. At all levels of competition, students receive critiques from qualified teachers, professionals and theater practitioners, allowing them to improve their theatrical skills. The events culminate in an awards ceremony where trophies, plaques, medals and other awards are presented to recognize outstanding work in technical categories and performance areas.

MERRY EVERYTHING & HAPPY ALWAYS: CHRISTMAS AT ST. LUKE'S
St. Luke's has had a very busy and memorable Christmas season! Our fabulous Christmas Under the Oaks on December 5th was the perfect kickoff for this festive season.
Thanks to EVERYONE who helps make St. Luke's so MERRY & BRIGHT!
Here are just a few ways that St. Luke's celebrated Christmas!
Santa had a great time visiting these 6th graders!

Annual 3rd grade Colonial Christmas
Our 3rd-grade students had a wonderful day learning about the customs of the Colonial era by dressing in colonial-style clothing and making candles, quilting, writing with quill and ink, making and playing colonial games, making butter for biscuits, weaving, etc.

Art students make ornaments for Christmas Tree Decorating Contest
Mrs. Cummings' talented art students have been busy making ornaments for the Christmas tree displayed at Mobile Regional Airport. The tree theme this year is "Sweet Home Alabama." Each Art 1 and Pottery 1 student selected a city and made ornaments to represent each. The advanced classes made the bigger items to unify the tree - such as the tree topper and the base of the tree. The 7th and 8th-grade art students created homes that represent their idea of "home." Mrs. Lersch's 6th graders stitched the names of different cities on AL ornaments. Voting will begin Friday afternoon. Be on the lookout for when and how you can help St. Luke's win the 2023 contest!

K2, K3 & K4 Polar Express Day
St. Luke's preschool students cashed in their tickets and took their annual trip to the North Pole via the St. Luke's Polar Express!

7th Grade Life Science Christmas-Themed Fun
Mrs. Friedlander's 7th Grade Life Science Class participated in a Christmas-themed mystery escape room to discover which staff member worked with the Christmas Villain to steal Rudolph. They answered questions to unlock each step, which aided them in an exam review - all while sipping green Christmas punch!

Wildcat Band Spreads LOTS of Holiday Cheer!
The Wildcat Band works hard all year, but they REALLY work hard to bring us great music during the Christmas season!
Mr. D and the Wildcat Band really brought joy with their Christmas concert! We have some highly talented students who outdid themselves with their performance!
| |
The Wildcat Band also performed at the "Christmas Assembly" on the University Campus. Faculty sang "The 12 Days of Christmas" to the students, followed by an ugly sweater contest! As you can tell, the students were quite cheerful!
Our Wildcat Band was invited to perform at the inaugural Christmas Party for the Africatown Heritage House. It was our pleasure to perform some Christian songs and Christmas music for the joyous crowd at this special event. Our students play a beautiful variety of instruments, including trumpet, trombone, accordion, flute, saxophone, clarinet, percussion, string bass, guitar, piano, and more!
Santa Ensures the Best Healthcare for his Elves
Elves build toys at an escalating pace to help Santa prepare for Christmas. Unfortunately, the Science Lab Elf was injured working in Santa's workshop. Our little Biomed students helped treat him to get him back to work ASAP!
