Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Among the notable figures often spotlighted are Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson and Barack Obama who've made a profound impact in history. This year's theme “African Americans and the Arts,” explores the key influence African Americans have had in the fields of "visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression."

February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. An issue that impacts everyone - not just teens. According to youth.gov, "nationwide, youth age 12 to 19 experience the highest rates of rape and sexual assault. Studies show that approximately 10% of adolescents report being the victim of physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner during the previous year." Students who are victimized or witness violence bring this experience with them to school, the classroom, and teen relationships. Adolescents in abusive relationships often carry these unhealthy patterns of violence into future relationships.
We aim to break the cycle of violence by promoting safe healthy relationships at Ganesha High School. Every Wednesday in February, during lunch, we will focus on a topic: Teen Dating Violence, Respect, Boundaries, and Empowerment. Students can attend these wellness discussions with our social workers and learn ways to build healthy relationships.

|
Parents, please remind your students to come to school on time and attend every day for an opportunity to receive a special treat each month!
