LaGuardia Professors and Students Collaborate with Gilder Lehrman Institute to Develop ‘Rights and Duties of Citizenship’ Projects
During the 2023 Spring Semester Dr. Chelsea Del Rio, professor of History and Dr. Anja Vojvodic, professor of Political Science, taught a class on civics, defined as the “rights and duties of citizenship” in the Social Sciences Department. This program and the course were spearheaded and supported by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History (GLI), a leading non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the “understanding of American history” through education. The professors worked closely with four LaGuardia students, Lucia Chavira, Giovana Maldonado, Debbie Avila, and Brenda Pazaran. Each week in class students learned about key aspects of civics, including civil dialogue, the Bill of Rights and rule of law. Students also went on a field trip to the historic Gilder Lehrman Archives and in the afternoon were treated to a showing of the musical Hamilton. At the end of the semester, students created final projects related to themes in civics and contemporary topics, such as abortion, gun control and climate change. Their work is featured on the Gilder Lehrman website and will serve as a model for furthering this worthwhile program nationwide.

LaGuardia Holiday Drives Support Students, their Families (including Pets), and the Community
The season for giving to those in need has begun and LaGuardia is hosting a variety of holiday drives to encourage everyone to participate in any way they can. This year, LaGuardia is hosting its first Pet Pantry Drive, December 4–6, to establish a new pet care section for the LaGuardia CARES pantry. The drive is being organized by the Vet Tech Club, a student organization whose members are primarily students of LaGuardia’s Veterinary Technology program, the only degree program of its kind in the New York City region. Veterinary Technicians are essential members of a veterinary team, akin to nurses working with medical doctors treating human patients. In addition, LaGuardia’s Campus Life office is collecting toiletries, winter coats, clothing, and footwear for LaGuardia CARES. Learn more.

LaGuardia and Wagner Archives’ 2024 Calendar, “Pleasure and Protest: Public Spaces in New York City”
The LaGuardia and Wagner Archives has announced the publication of its 2024 calendar. Titled “Pleasure and Protest: Public Spaces in New York City,” the calendar showcases the myriad ways that New Yorkers convene, advocate, and celebrate throughout New York City. A unique resource among CUNY colleges, the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives collects and preserves materials illuminating the social and political history of New York City. Every year since 1979, the Archives has produced a calendar to bring assets from its vast collections to members of the public. This is the 45th calendar in its series. According to Archives Deputy Director Soraya Ciego-Lemur, the 2024 calendar spotlights the sense of community New Yorkers create in shared spaces. It “brings the intricate social landscape of New York City to your wall,” she added. Beginning on December 15, the calendar may be viewed or downloaded at no cost, in English and Spanish, on the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives website. Printed copies of the calendar (limited quantities available) may be requested by calling the Archives at (718) 482-5065 or submitting a request online.

Prof. Habiba Boumlik has been selected to participate in the CAORC (Council of American Overseas Research centers)-WARC (West African Research Association) 2024 Overseas Faculty Development Seminar in Senegal. The CAORC-WARC is a fully-funded faculty seminar to help faculty and administrators gain the requisite first-hand experience needed to internationalizing courses, curricula, and teaching materials. Dr. Boumlik says she plans to use the opportunity to enhance content taught in French language courses and augment selection of reading from Senegal, encompassing both original French text and English translations. “My aspiration is to also establish a partnership with a Senegalese university, paving the way for a new Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project,” Dr. Boumlik said. “This collaboration would further amplify the potential for cross-cultural engagement and enhance the educational experience for students from both institutions.” By participating in this seminar Dr. Boumlik says it will enable her to gain first-hand understanding of the cultural, social, and environmental issues affecting West Africa today, and she will use this understanding to develop more nuanced syllabi and assignments that focus on this important part of the world.

New Cortex XDR Endpoint Security Protection – Leave Your Campus Computer On
In response to cyber-attacks across CUNY, the University has transitioned from Trellix software to Cortex XDR (extended detection and response), a new, more effective endpoint security solution against a new generation of ransomware and cybersecurity threats.
Cortex XDR (XDR) collects and automatically correlates data across multiple security layers – email, endpoint, server, cloud workload, and network. This allows for faster detection of threats and improved investigation and response times through security analysis.
The transition to XDR applies to all CUNY-owned devices, including desktop computers, laptops, MacBook Pros, iMacs, iPads, Chromebooks, etc. Although most on-campus devices have already been automatically upgraded, to ensure the XDR upgrade occurs on your device, please leave your computer on when you leave campus.
CUNY and external vendors regularly release security and program updates that are automatically integrated into our system, usually in the evening. In addition, the LaGuardia IT team releases campus-wide patch updates weekly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. By leaving your computer on, it’s automatically updated at night so your PC will operate at peak efficiency.
If you have any cyber security questions, please contact LaGuardia's Information Security.
