December 10 is Human Rights Day, and this year marks the 75th anniversary of the seminal Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Human Rights 75 initiative involves a daily countdown, a roadmap, and ways that you can take action.

Welcome Note

As fall quarter comes to a close and the holiday season approaches, we are reminded of the many things we have to be grateful for. We have a wonderful community of supporters that make it possible for us to do the work that we do and an incredible team of staff and volunteers that dedicate their days to partnering with our students to accomplish their goals. And of course we have students that show up every day determined to create a better life for themselves and their family. Sharing our student projects is a great way to see not only the skills that they are developing, but also how we all strive for the same things. Amanuel, a student in our new Ready to Work Bridge class, shares in his midterm essay why education is important to him: "to develop my communication skills to have a better future for me and my family, especially for my kids." In his essay, Gadisa says: "Education generates positive attitude in me. I become more motivated, more productive. It takes away negativity from my life." It is quotes like these that remind us of how much our work makes a difference in the lives of our students.

We'd also love to share with you some center updates. We are fully running a split schedule now, with all our day time class offerings in-person and our evening classes in Zoom to better accommodate all students. The daytime conversation classes will be offered in-person starting in winter, and we're also looking forward to having a second section of Beginning Computer Skills - this class is going great and in high demand. We will also be adding an evening section of ESOL 2 as our levels 1-3 in the evening have long waitlists and we're trying to meet that demand.

We continue to meet such an important and growing need in our community and we couldn't do it without your support. We wish you and your loved ones all the best this holiday season. Oh, and don't forget to snuggle up with your favorite book and a cup of tea for our Stay at Home Tea fundraiser (see below)!

Student Spotlight

Mulunesh is a student in our Ready to Work class, a job-skills ESOL class that teaches reading, writing, listening, speaking, math, and digital literacy in work-ready contexts. Read on to find out more about Mulunesh's experience and why this class is important in her life.

What would you like to tell us about yourself?

I came to the United States in September 2006 from Ethiopia. That December, I started working the night shift cleaning for a janitorial services company. I worked there for years until I was laid off. One year later, I started another job at a food service company. I worked there for years until a family emergency.

2. Why did you decide to take classes at Literacy Source?

I started in the Ready to Work class with Literacy Source this spring to learn more English and develop my speaking and writing.

Goodbye to Phil

Phil has been such a great innovator and teacher on our Literacy Source team for the past four years. He led our ABE and GED program and helped strengthen our instruction in many ways: from managing our GED testing process to spearheading new classes, Phil always looked for new and effective ways to pursue leadership paths with our students. He also helped with the transition to online learning, supported strong digital literacy teaching, and revamped our New Student Registration Process through the pandemic and re-opening.

Best of luck, Phil, you will be missed!
