What's New in Translational Science?
|
NCATS’ role in finding and testing metformin as a treatment for COVID-19 has spanned the entire drug development process — from early observational studies to large-scale clinical trials. Now, the Accelerating COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines (ACTIV) partnership’s ACTIV-6 clinical trial, overseen by NCATS, is testing metformin as an outpatient treatment for people with mild-to-moderate COVID-19. Metformin’s addition to the nationwide ACTIV-6 testing lineup could bring clarity to the drug’s value in treating COVID-19 and potentially preventing long COVID.

To facilitate innovative research, the CCTS will award vouchers to Ohio State and Nationwide Children's Hospital investigators worth up to $3,000. To support new collaborations, the CCTS will award Ohio State and Nationwide Children's Hospital investigators up to $5,000 for projects involving researchers from two different colleges or institutions.
The voucher program is open through July 31, 2024, and processes applications on a rolling basis.

Applications are now being accepted for a unique three-year postdoctoral fellowship, offered jointly by NCATS and the FDA. Fellows train at both the NCATS internal research labs and the Food and Drug Administration, and develop their skills in both preclinical translational science and regulatory science.
Fellows are expected to spend three years in combined training at the FDA and NCATS. It is anticipated that fellows will spend 12 to 18 months of the fellowship at the FDA and the remainder of the fellowship at NCATS. The exact timing of the transition between the two agencies will be project and mentor dependent.

ResearchMatch Virtual "Interviews"
To demystify the research process and put a face to the researchers that use ResearchMatch, a team at Vanderbilt University has started conducting short, informal, virtual interviews with researchers from across the country.
These short videos provide an opportunity for our ResearchMatch researchers to share about their field of study, why research is important and how it makes an impact.

Recruitment and Retention ResearchMatch Recognition
Mary Becker, Recruitment and Retention manager at the CCTS, was recently featured in this month's edition of ResearchMatch Liaison. In it, she talks about the success the recruitment program has seen by running social media ads promoting ResearchMatch.
"Overall, the campaign saw its highest engagement and return on investment (ROI) among older age groups, especially individuals over 65."
Congrats, Mary, for this recognition!
