Department of Defense, Air Force Materiel Command, AFRL - Rome Research Site, AFRL/Information Directorate — Adaptive Fusion, Analysis & Reasoning of multi-source data (AFAR) - The Air Force Research Laboratory, Information Directorate is seeking innovative approaches for the fusion, analysis and reasoning of multi-source data to advance their analytical operations in support of their Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I) and Cyber Science mission. The three research areas within this AFAR BAA are (A) Adaptive Knowledge and Information for Target Analysis (AKITA), (B) Enhancing Moving Target Engagement at Scale (EMoTES) and (C) Publicly Available Information (PAI) Ensemble Fusion (PEF) with each containing their respective key technical Focus Areas for development.
In other data news, on September 1st, The Federalist published an article entitled U.S. Government Funded ‘Human-AI Teaming’ Research Monitoring ‘Social Media Messages’ During Covid Lockdowns. In this story, Samuel Mangold-Lenett describes how the National Science Foundation allocated nearly $70,000 to three universities in 2020 for a research grant called "Human-AI Teaming for Big Data Analytics to Enhance Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic". The project analyzed social media messages to assist first responders in disaster mitigation; but there are concerns that such technology could also be used for surveillance and speech monitoring by the government, given past instances of collaboration between federal agencies and tech companies to monitor online activities.
-
“'Social media data can provide important clues and local knowledge that can help emergency managers and responders better comprehend and capture the evolving nature of many disasters,' the project’s abstract states. This funding enabled researchers to study how artificial intelligence algorithms can help authorities track, and potentially act on, Americans' online speech.”

HUD is way behind on a crucial data sharing, anti-fraud portal | Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is one of something like 30 agencies that have a hand in disaster recovery. In trying to avoid duplicating benefits to disaster victims, in 2017 HUD started work on a data portal. A place where grantees would load information on benefits the had already received, so HUD could see it. HUD’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) has found the data portal is only partially completed. That has made it hard for people to erase their digital footprints, especially because the law has exceptions that allow businesses to deny a deletion request. | |
