Oct. 7-9, 2023: Medical Campus Power Shutdown
As part of the effort to modernize the main electrical service station that serves the core of the Medical Campus, a planned electrical shutdown will take place Oct. 7-9, 2023. The primary objective of this project is to upgrade all breakers and controls to ensure greater reliability performance and longevity for one of the main feeders of electrical service to the Medical Campus from the Eversource power grid.
During this period, the following buildings – L, R, A, B, K, E, C, & D – will be powered solely on life safety emergency/generator power. These buildings will be closed to the public and have restricted access during the utility interruption.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Joe Kajunski, assistant director of building systems, at [email protected], or Christopher Fernald, director of facilities operations, at [email protected].

Date: Monday, Oct. 2
Time: 10:30-11:45 a.m.
Location: Hiebert Lounge (L14), or via Zoom
Register for Zoom here
“Where Autoimmunity and Pathogen Immunity Meet: Tuning Immune Responses in Lupus and Salmonella Infection”
Dr. Shlomchik is the UPMC Endowed Distinguished Professor of Immunology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is known for his research in systemic autoimmune diseases and B cell immune responses and memory. His lab also works on T cell immunotherapy for cancer using their newly invented TCXpress TCR cloning and functional testing platform; in 2018 this platform spawned the biotechnology company BlueSphere Bio, which focuses on personalized adoptive T cell therapy for cancer and in which Dr. Shlomchik is currently chief scientific officer.
His scientific contributions include discoveries relating to the role of mutation, clonal expansion and affinity maturation in B cell immune responses; antibody-independent roles of B cells in activating autoreactive T cell responses; elucidation of both germinal center and memory B cell responses in mice and humans; discovery of the extrafollicular response and short-lived plasmablast response as a major mode of autoreactive B cell activation; and the role of TLRs in both activating and regulating autoimmunity in vivo. Dr. Shlomchik is PI on several NIH grants, including a T32 on autoimmunity and immunopathology. He has trained more than 50 fellows, most of whom remain in science and several of whom have independent faculty positions.
Dr. Shlomchik obtained his BA in biology from Harvard College and his MD and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his residency in pathology and laboratory medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at Fox Chase Cancer Center, he joined the faculty of Yale University School of Medicine in the departments of laboratory medicine and immunobiology where he remained for 20 years, becoming a tenured professor. In 2013 Dr. Shlomchik joined the Department of Immunology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he served as Chair until 2022.
