How Might Construction Affect School Functions?

As a reminder, the residents of the Yorkville Jt. #2 School District passed at the voting polls to approve a $12.1 million dollar construction referendum. To review the items included in this remodel, please reference the September 2023 newsletter linked here: September 7, 2023 - Issue #28.

The purpose of this December newsletter is provide in a FAQ format the timeline for construction and access to the facilities.

When will construction start?

In June 2024 the main parking lot and the driveway will be torn up and completely replaced, including new light poles and a new flow to traffic and parking.

Will we still have summer school?

Yes, but access to the facility will have various interruptions and there will not be access to most of the classrooms. As such, course offerings will be significantly changed and/or reduced for the summer of 2024. There will be times you may drive on the fresh gravel prior to blacktop installation. There may be times when you will have to access the facility via the north doors by the driveway front loop. We will keep you posted via emails, Facebook, signage, and other means of communication.

How might this affect the roughly 150 games of summer baseball?

Summer baseball should be able to run as normal, however vehicle access will periodically be limited to the playground area that is northeast of the baseball fields. This playground blacktop area is due to be replaced, but not until the summer of 2025. In the interim it will serve as a temporary summer baseball and softball parking lot. We will communicate with league organizers and provide signage and barricades as necessary.

Which areas of blacktop are being replaced and when?

Almost all areas of blacktop are due for replacement. The summer of 2024 will be the main parking lot and the driveway from Hwy 20 to that parking lot. The summer of 2025 will be the blacktop driveway loop in front of the building, the blacktop recess/basketball areas (2), and the east driveway leading to those playgrounds.

When are all of the IT projects to occur?

The summer of 2024 the following systems are scheduled to be completely replaced:

  • New phone system
  • New PA system
  • New Wi-Fi access points in every classroom
  • New wiring closets
  • New camera system

The only exception is for some classrooms or locations that are not scheduled for construction until the summer of 2025 (see below).

What portions of the facility will be under construction, when, and what specific upgrades will be included?

The Summer of 2024

The portion of the building includes the Kindergarten wing, the 1st-3rd grade classrooms and guidance office space, and the entire second floor including 4th-5th grade classrooms, the Junior High wing, and the small gym. What construction and upgrades will be addressed?

  • New energy efficient windows
  • New ceiling tile
  • New energy efficient lighting
  • New floor tile including asbestos abatement in all areas identified
  • New carpet replacement
  • Painting of all interior walls
  • New univents and ventilation system providing us with:
  • Air conditioning
  • Energy efficiencies
  • Proper air exchange
  • New countertops and cabinets in classrooms and offices
  • Added FOB system for safer exterior doors and monitoring
  • New classroom doors, hardware, and locks with new keys system throughout
  • Added electrical outlets to meet today’s Chromebook needs

  • Brick and mortar work on exterior

Not included during the summer of 2024 but rather addressed the summer of 2025 will be 4K hallway classrooms and offices, the music rooms, the main office, cafeteria, and library.

Will all of the traditional summer school classes be able to be offered?

We are unsure of how this might look. We are able to host summer school again, but access to the building in the areas identified above will be largely reduced in scope. Stay tuned for summer school plans in an upcoming newsletter.
