Dean's Update: Connections to Scholarship in March

Connections - the concept of bringing together two or more of something - is a theme that travels through much of the work done at Drexel University. In the Libraries, it includes bringing together ideas and people. You surely have experienced library programs in your lifetime that facilitate authors reaching readers, deliver distantly held books, guided students to discover images or articles, or identified a kindred intellectual spirit by exploring similar topics. As an academic library and part of a comprehensive research university, the Drexel Libraries is guided by one of its core strategic directions to "strengthen Drexel's connections to scholarship."   We do so in many ways-through services to license and lower costs to access electronic resources, through integrating automated systems to facilitate easy discovery of authoritative information, through instruction to master techniques to effectively navigate and ethically use information, through archiving historic materials to preserve locally created ideas and expressions for global discovery.

MAKING THE MOST OF THE SUN - JONATHAN SPANIER TO SPEAK AT MARCH SCHOLARSIP EVENT

Society has an insatiable demand for energy, and solar energy remains the most promising and abundant source of renewable, clean energy. However, in 2010, less than .2% of global consumption of electricity was from solar. So, why isn't large-scale production of electricity from solar more prevalent?Jonathan Spanier, PhD, will address these questions and more during his presentation, titled "Making the most of the Sun," at the March ScholarSip event.

COPYRIGHT IS THE FOCUS OF MARCH 21ST EVENT

Copyright impacts academia on both producer and consumer ends of the scholarly production cycle. Authors' fees and restrictive licenses seem to have led to an inhospitable climate for open scholarly publishing, while restrictions on the use of copyrighted material continue to create challenges for online learning and distance education.

METADATA EXPLAINED: Q&A WITH HOLLY TOMREN, HEAD OF METDATA SERVICES

So much of what the Libraries do goes on behind the scenes - and when it works really well, we can easily forget that someone is working on it at all. Such is the case for the work done by Holly Tomren and her team. Holly is the person that adds metadata to Drexel collections to make sure that people can find what they are looking for. So, what is metadata you ask? I sat down with Holly for this month's Q & A to learn more.
