Community Newsletter November 20, 2023 Volume 10 Issue 3

Greetings, Community Members and Partners –

The past few weeks have been very productive for Lone Star College-Houston North. We entered our second 8-week term with over 3,400 students---our highest enrollment to date. In addition, we completed our first 8-week term with our highest semester course rate that our students have ever achieved with an 80.8% A, B, or C success rate. Our students are continually proving that they are capable of doing incredible things when they are in a supportive environment.

In addition, we received results from the Community College Student Survey for Engagement (CCSSE), a national survey that benchmarks our students' engagement against other, similar-sized institutions. I am very proud to note that Lone Star College-Houston North was above the comparison institutions in all five categories (Active and Collaborative Learning, Student Effort, Academic Challenge, Student-Faculty Interaction, and Support for Learners). The category that our students scored our college the highest on was support for learners. There was an 18-point difference over the comparison cohort. This shows that our students feel that the college is meeting their in and out-of-class needs.

In addition to our student achievements, we also had several community events and/or celebrations.

Dia De Los Muertos Movie Night at HN-Fallbrook

Nearly 300 community members attended our Dia De Los Muertos movie night at LSC-Houston North Fallbrook. We began the event with a short program and performances by the Carver High School mariachi band and folklorico dancers, followed by a viewing of Coco.

Acres Homes Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet

One of our students was also honored at the annual Acres Homes Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. Felicia Mayon, a Human Services student, received the Chamber's scholarship. She has an inspirational story. What I appreciated the most about this event was how the elected and community leaders embraced and encouraged her.

Breast Cancer Awareness Walk at HN-Victory

Our Brother 4 Brother and Sisters Aspiring for Greatness in Education (SAGE) student organizations organized a Breast Cancer Awareness walk at our Victory location. This is an annual event designed to raise funds and awareness for this issue.

Giving Thanks to our Community Partners

Lastly, we are grateful to everyone that has stepped up to help us meet the basic needs of our students.

I want to express my sincerest appreciation to Pastor David, the Houston Northeast Community Development Corporation, HEB, and State Representative Armando Walle for donating Turkey gift certificates for our students. This generosity will enable many of our students to enjoy holiday meals with their families.

CARE Center Needs

In addition, we have seen a significant increase in students utilizing our CARE Centers (food/basic needs pantries). Last year, we had 4,400 visits the entire year. However, we had over 1,000 visits in just this October. With this type of usage, keeping our centers stocked is a challenge. That is why I am so grateful to our Lone Star College Offices of Human Resources, Technology Services, our Foundation team, and our System Office Professional Support Staff for each hosting food drives to support our students. This kindness enables us to continue this service.

If you are interested in supporting our CARE Centers, please contact Ashley Turner-Captain (Ashley.Turner@LoneStar.edu) and she will provide you with further details.

As always, I want to thank each of you for being wonderful community partners. We could not serve our students the way that we do without your generosity.

I wish each of you the best.

Sincerely,

Quentin Wright, Ed.D.

Veteran's Day Luncheon

We are so grateful for the men and women who have served in the armed forces to protect our freedom and liberties.

To show our appreciation, we hosted a Veteran’s Day luncheon for LSC-Houston North employees and students who have served in the armed forces. A lunch does not compare to the sacrifice they have made but it is our way of saying thank you.

Our Panther Pact Emergency Fund is a safety net for our students, with 100% of the proceeds helping them directly.

We are the most diverse Lone Star College institution and our locations exist in the lowest-income sections of our system’s service area. However, for the past three years, our students have continually had some of the highest completion rates within the system.

We invested a lot of time into developing partnerships so we can help students in a cost-efficient manner. We've helped students remove barriers such as food insecurity, clothing and toiletry needs, textbook costs, as well as a technology divide.

Your contribution will directly support a student in continuing their legacy.
