Tribute to Steve Messner (Oct. 6, 1936 - Nov. 20, 2018)
It is with heavy heart that we report on the passing of former Center for Real Estate Director Steve Messner.  Steve was an exceptional person and professor.  For those of us lucky enough to have worked with him or have him as a teacher, we will remember his friendly smile, encouraging and helpful style, and quick wit and intellect.

After receiving his undergraduate, masters, and doctorate degrees from Indiana University, Steve joined the University of Connecticut in 1966.  A year later, Steve helped found and receive funding for the Center, and spent the next two and half decades developing the UConn real estate program into a nationally-ranked and well-respected academic powerhouse. During his long and illustrious career at UConn, he served as Center Director, Finance Department Head, Associate Dean of the Business School, and Interim Dean of the Business School.

Steve was very involved with the real estate profession, and developed educational material or served as an educational consultant to numerous state and national real estate organizations, including the Connecticut and National Association of Realtors, the Connecticut Real Estate Commission, the Appraisal Institute, the Society of Real Estate Appraisers, Certified Commercial Investment Managers, and the Society of Industrial Realtors. Steve was also very involved in in academic real estate organizations, and served as President and Director of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association.

Steve will be fondly remembered by both colleagues and students.  We all appreciate the lasting legacy he has left on the University of Connecticut Center for Real Estate.
