The Ally: We Support You While Your Support Your Child

| The past two weeks have not been easy: another devastating school shooting, an unprecedented second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and continued political discord and strife. It's not easy for us as adults to sort through our adult feelings about traumatic and confusing issues, let alone help our children deal with their feelings. There are no easy answers. We promise none. But we always promise to support you as you figure out how you want to support your child. We also share some resources about discussing hard things with our children this week. We hope they give all of us some starting ideas. This week's blog posts discuss two essential education meetings you can attend virtually or in person. The Special Education Advisory Panel meets from 10 a.m. to noon on September 18. This federally mandated group advises the Mississippi Department of Education about its special education policies and each school district's special education services. All panel meetings are public and include time for public comments. The K-12 Mental Health Task Force meets from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on September 18 and will discuss key takeaways about supporting children's mental health at school. This group will then make recommendations to the legislature.
We share information about voter registration in a third blog post. Please ensure you are registered to vote and take time to learn which candidates best match your family's priorities. Election Day is November 5. You must be registered by October 7 to vote on Election Day.
Remember to take the Community Feedback Survey about Mississippi's behavioral health system and share your ideas about what people with mental illness and substance use disorders and their families need. Your ideas matter, and you can share freely: the survey is anonymous. Please pass it along to family, friends and anyone who cares about mental health. I hope you will join us for our Parent Peer Support Graduation this Friday at 1 p.m. These participants have worked hard and are ready to support other parents in the same shoes. Please celebrate with them. Also, please plan to join us on Wednesday, September 25, from noon to 1 p.m. for our monthly leadership and policy discussion. Among other things, we will discuss recommendations from the K-12 Mental Health Task Force and possible ways the Community Feedback Survey could be used to strengthen services for people with mental health or substance use challenges.
Check out our events calendar for more support and learning opportunities.
I am so grateful for all of you! | |
