During August and September, the Foundations Class discuss the #BeUMC curriculum created as a part of the #BeUMC campaign. You might have noticed the banner in front of the church that is a part of the campaign as well. This study was created to help us understand who we are as United Methodists, our traditions, our history, and our theology. “The United Methodist Church is founded on a Wesleyan theology of grace, anchored in Scripture, and based in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and the continuing movement of the Holy Spirit.” If you want to engage in conversations and learn more about being a United Methodist come join us for class on Sunday mornings. Everyone is welcome to join us at 9:45 in Room 111.

Wednesday Night Study

Starting September 13, 2023

Do you want to know more about The United Methodist Church? Join us on Wednesday evenings for a weekly discussion that includes our history, traditions, and theology.  We will work through the entire #BeUMC campaign curriculum, learning how we can be more engaged in the life of the church, what it means to be connectional, and what it means to be committed to Saint Mark UMC and to The United Methodist Church as a whole. Come learn what it means when we say, “The United Methodist Church is founded on a Wesleyan theology of grace, anchored in Scripture, and based in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and the continuing movement of the Holy Spirit.” You can find all the resources for class on umc.org, so no book is required, but it will be helpful to have read the materials for the session prior to class, you don’t have to attend every session, while they do build on one another, they also can stand alone.  If you are interested in participating and want more information please contact Michelle Levan – michelle.levan@gmail.com or by phone at 404-405-0274

Join us for a GROOVY neighborhood block party that will recreate the 1970s on 4th Street at Peachtree!

This free event will feature live music from the Spaghetti Junction, food trucks, ice cream, beer and wine, activities for all ages, and an opportunity to mingle with your Midtown neighbors.

The 1970s ushered in a time of great cultural change and innovation. Midtown Atlanta was, and remains, alive with the spirit of peace, love and an ever-increasing interest in building a strong community.

This event is produced by the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, with support from St. Mark United Methodist Church of Atlanta and is sponsored by Midtown Alliance.

We need volunteers from Saint Mark to show up like we always do!

Disciple Bible Study

Disciple I Fast Track Bible Study is a 24-week in-depth review of the Old and New Testaments. The study comprises 15 to 30 minutes a day of bible reading and dynamic group discussions during the weekly meetings. The purpose is not to make you a Bible scholar, but to enhance your spiritual journey as a disciple of Christ.

A new class will begin Wednesday September 6th right after the Wednesday dinner. The study will be in two parts…12 weeks in the fall covering the Old Testament and 12 weeks in the spring covering the New Testament. Buddy Wofford will lead the study.

The book for the first session is $17 and scholarships are available.

If this time does not work for you, you may be able to join an existing class either Sunday morning or Tuesday’s at 6:00.

“ All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” - 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

Dear Saint Mark Family,

The young adult group at Saint Mark has been incredibly active as of late, in fellowship, growth, and volunteering. It’s been a pleasure to be a part of the congregation at Saint Mark, and we would like to share with this congregation one of the causes that has been placed on the hearts of some of our members.

The City of Atlanta plans to build the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, dubbed by opponents as “Cop City.” The building of this new training center would lead to the destruction of the South River Forest, formerly indigenous land and one of the largest and most important greenspaces in the city of Atlanta.

Many Atlanteans, including some of our young adults ministry, are staunchly opposed to the construction of this facility for a myriad of reasons, including the fact that it could likely become a militarized training facility that will not only destroy valuable greenspace, but could also increase the potential for police brutality.  The recent death of a protester and numerous wrongful arrests are indicative of what could likely happen if there is no accountability or check and balance in place.

It is for this reason some of the young adults have written a statement about our concerns of this building of this new facility. We view this as a cause that exists at the intersection of many social and environmental justice issues. This letter is not the stance of Saint Mark itself, but simply a letter from members of the young adult ministry to the congregation, so persons can learn more, and to create space for dialogue about this topic we care about deeply.   Click here for statements from some our young adults.

There is currently an ongoing effort to gather enough signatures from the residents of Atlanta to petition for a referendum to be added to the ballot in the upcoming Atlanta city elections. This is not a petition to stop construction of the facility, but simply to *allow the residents of the city to vote* on whether or not this is the best way to use our tax dollars.

Below are links to articles on the movement and information on how to help. A number of our young adults are available to answers whatever questions you may have, and to listen to your comments and recommendations. Please reach out to any of us, we welcome hearing from you.

Thank you,

The Young Adults of Saint Mark

As summer fades and yellow buses return, routines settle in and we yearn to connect with friends, family, and our community. The church doors stand open, welcoming new beginnings or return to our roots.

May the days ahead be full of faithful living.

May we find hope and joy.

May we revive our passions for the deeper purpose God brings to our lives.

Let’s shine the light of God’s love so that all may see it and invite them to join us on the life-changing, life-giving journey we walk with Jesus.

See you at church!
