Domain of One's Own

On behalf Domain of One's Own Pilot Committee

The university has recently begun a project called “Domain of One’s Own,” which involves renting server space for the individual use of faculty and their students. That space, which will be controlled by those same faculty or students rather than the university, can then be filled with any variety of open-source programs like WordPress, Scalar or Omeka. Such projects, common at other universities, are often associated with the Digital Humanities, but really they can be used for everything from faculty websites to student portfolios and everything in between. One of the advantages of this set up is that student work can be displayed permanently on the web. Another advantage is that students can also take their web sites with them when they graduate.

There will be an introductory workshop for faculty interested in trying this out on August 16th from 3:30-500PM in the Flexible Teaching Area on the second floor of LARC in the new Learning, Innovating, and Networking Center (LINC). The idea behind the meeting is to offer enough time so that faculty who are interested in using this space (packsites.net is the URL) will be comfortable enough to try it this semester. If you prefer to start smaller, perhaps come to the session and just walk out with a web site of your own. Then expand it to your classes next semester. Experienced faculty and LINC tutors will be available all semester to help you learn what you need to know to make this tool fit your needs. If you don’t know what your needs are, consider joining us to learn a little bit more about what this project can do for you.

NSF Funding Opportunity: Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI Program)

On behalf of The Office of Research Development

The NSF HSI program aims to enhance the quality of undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and to increase the recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of students pursuing associates or baccalaureate degrees in STEM. Projects must include strategies that support building capacity at the University through innovative approaches: to incentivize institutional and community transformation; to promote fundamental research (i) on engaged student learning, (ii) about what it takes to diversify and increase participation in STEM effectively, and (iii) that improves our understanding of how to build institutional capacity at HSIs. The outcomes of the HSI Program include broadening the participation of historically underrepresented students in STEM and expanding students' pathways to continued STEM education and integration into the STEM workforce. The program accepts proposals in three tracks; however, faculty members at our University have been most successful with the Track 2 program. Track 2 or Implementation and Evaluation Projects (IEP) supports the implementation of the evidence-based unit-, department-, or multi-department-level activities that will enhance the quality of undergraduate STEM education. These projects may design and implement a new educational practice or practices and/or adapt/replicate evidence-based practices that are already known to be effective. In addition to the core research of the proposed project, all tracks may support faculty research that is inter-, multi-, or trans-disciplinary, discipline-specific research, STEM education research, discipline-based STEM education research, or broadening participation research. Research may be based at their home institution, an NSF-funded research center, another institution of higher education, and/or a national laboratory. 2023 Application deadline: August 30, 2023.

Nutrition for Mental Health Fundamentals!!

On behalf of the Psychology Department

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough for Mental Health? Well, yes…when it’s made with chickpeas! (Trust me, it’s delicious!) An estimated 90% of our serotonin is made in the gut, which is driven by the more than 100 trillion bacteria that live there. And when they’re happy, they work hard to make us happy! Chickpeas contain the fiber they love, as well as the tryptophan, B6, and iron needed to make serotonin. Not sure about the cookie dough? What about Kung Pao Chickpeas? Crispy Roasted Chickpeas? Chickpea Masala? In this class we’ll explore different foods and recipes as we learn about vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients; the gut-brain-immune axis; hormones and the HPA axis; and neurotransmitters like serotonin and acetylcholine. We’ll also talk about food sensitivities, food allergies, popular diets, and why it’s best to ditch inaccurate markers of health like weight and BMI, using current research as backup every step of the way. This class stands alone or serves as a prerequisite to Advanced Nutrition for Mental Health, to be offered next Spring. And that Cookie Dough? We’ll be trying it together in class! You’ll also get dinner each week, a direct application of the material we’re learning. Week 1 is chili and cornbread!

Researchers and Program Managers, Update Your CITI Compliance Training Requirements

On behalf of Office of Research and Sponsored Programs

Please ensure that your CITI Program Compliance training is current as required by the University and state and federal funding agencies.

Compliance is a critical part of the operation of any university, and non-compliance can negatively affect not only a single researcher but all university researchers. CSU Pueblo provides all faculty, staff, and students with the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) for its research compliance training requirements.

New to the CITI Program? CITI is utilized by the Top-25 Best National Universities, 95% of Carnegie R1 Research Universities, more than 12 million users, with more than 22 million total course completions.

With the recent influx of federal funding across the university, institutional compliance and proof of individual research compliance training and updates have become an even more essential requirement. In addition, individual non-compliance can also lead to research misconduct, so don’t delay!

To access the Office of Research and Sponsored Program’s Compliance Training Requirements and CITI Sign up/in instructions, follow the link below.

Fall 2023 Course - Cannabis Regulation

On behalf of the Cannabis, Biology, Chemistry (CBC) Program

CBC 491 3 credits Tuesday / Thursday 2:00-3:20

No prerequisite – open to all majors

Cannabis legal reform was launched by various States who dared to defy social convention and an entrenched culture of prohibition. Early reform efforts focused on limited decriminalization of marijuana by individuals who wished to cultivate the plant for personal medical treatment. As reform gained ground, a legitimate industry began to take shape despite the significant constraints presented by federal prohibition.

Non-psychoactive varieties of Cannabis, commonly called hemp, became a popular focus of reform as new technologies and markets emerged for Cannabis as a more energy-efficient, and less expensive substitute for a growing variety of household and industrial applications. Government regulators, law enforcement agents, and courts face increasing pressure to solve novel and enduring challenges in managing emerging interstate markets for Cannabis and Cannabis products.

This writing-intensive course explores the evolving landscape of Cannabis legal reform as it is now manifesting at the federal, state, and local levels. It seeks a broad and cohesive understanding of what has changed, why, and how change was even possible in the first place. Students should gain a deeper understanding of federalism, congressional powers, interstate commerce, the discriminatory origins of the War on Drugs, as well as policy considerations taken by states seeking to legalize medical or adult-use marijuana, and hemp. This course is an excellent complement to those studying cannabis, economics, history, sociology, anthropology, or criminal justice or pre-law.
