Maricopa County Cooling Center Survey

Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) is continuing to learn about people's health related to heat and their awareness of cooling centers in Maricopa County. They are inviting residents to share their experiences, even if they haven't visited a cooling center. The results of this survey will help MCDPH learn how cooling centers are being used during the hot Arizona summer and how extreme heat impacts health to ultimately improve upon keeping Maricopa County residents safe from extreme heat. The survey is anonymous and should only take 10 minutes to complete.

Public Charge Toolkit

Shared by Share Our Strength

Public charge is a term in immigration law that describes a person who is primarily dependent on the government for support. Immigration officials review applications for visas and green cards to determine if a person is likely to become a public charge, based on the individual’s income, age, family size, health, education, job, and affidavit of support (contract with a sponsor).

Protecting Immigrant Families (PIF) has designed many education and outreach materials to be customizable for partners’ local needs. PIF Partners in North Carolina created exciting, vibrant outreach graphics about the new public charge rule, using local images and simple messages to catch community members’ attention. Through in-person events, digital outreach, and virtual sessions, the coalition reached over 12,000 North Carolinians!

Your organization can create your customized version of PIF’s social media graphics, presentation materials, and fact sheets, using this toolkit as a starting point.

Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) Data Advisory Committee (DAC)

The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) Data Advisory Committee (DAC) has some exciting updates to share over the next few months. This month they are featuring the progress that’s been made on the Arizona Social Vulnerability Index (AzSVI).

ADHS is adapting the well-known Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Social Vulnerability Index to better reflect the experiences of people living in Arizona, incorporating several new data elements such as extreme heat and distance to health care facilities. Click here to view. The AzSVI will be an interactive data dashboard that can be used to estimate areas in greatest need and to reveal factors that contribute to health disparities. Working with the DAC, composed of data-savvy external partners and a team at Arizona State University, ADHS is nearing completion of the project in which they have prioritized community engagement at every step. The community and the DAC decided on the data to be included in the new AzSVI, how to display it, and what to prioritize in messaging about it. Voices of communities underrepresented in the data will be featured in stories from 10 one-on-one interviews we are conducting this month to highlight resilience and community strengths.

The AzSVI is still mid-development but they are looking forward to sharing this with the public soon along with information about how to use it. Be sure to look out for more updates over the coming months.
