Article - Ice Formation and Its Elimination In Cryopreservation of Oocytes

In an article in Nature, Robert E. Thorne* et al. explore ice formation in bovine oocytes during rapid cooling and warming, examining the impact of cryoprotective agent (CPA) concentration, cooling rates, and warming rates on ice formation. Synchrotron-based time-resolved x-ray diffraction was utilized to analyze the nature of ice formed during these processes. The study revealed that ice-related damage primarily occurs during warming, with the behavior of ice depending on its formation during cooling. Larger cooling rates were found to prevent ice formation in oocytes soaked in standard concentrations during both cooling and warming. *Robert E. Thorne is the founder of MiTeGen.
