Dear Wolverine Community,

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving among family and friends -- and enjoyed the big win! - because we have a big job to do this week. Many eyes are on our campus this week and tomorrow, Michigan Hillel, with support from Hillel International, has invited all Israel advocacy organizations who plan to be on campus this week to come together and collaborate as we support students to defeat AR 13-025. Coming together tomorrow morning, we will welcome colleagues from ADL, AEPi, Chabad, the iCenter, Israel on Campus Coalition, Maccabee Task Force, and Stand with Us. All advocates for Israel have been invited.

Tonight, I met with student leaders who are determined to defeat this anti-Israel resolution. We had the opportunity to hear from Shimon Levy, a Michigan Hillel Trustee and Captain (Res.), who just returned from reserve duty in Israel.  What Shimon shared, seeing the aftermath of 10/7, was a stark reminder of why this petition has to be defeated: antisemitism tries to define Jews, but we will not allow it, we define who we are based on how we act in this moment.

I shared the following email with the Hillel student community this evening. As a reminder of what we shared in our Education & Action webinars last week, please connect with any Michigan students you know on November 28 to ensure they have voted, support students' peer-to-peer efforts, share our social media messaging, and of course, connect with me at any time by replying to this email.

Starting Tuesday you can vote against divisiveness, antisemitism, and bigotry by voting no on AR 13-025 and yes on AR 13-026 at vote.umich.edu.

There are many views on the Middle East and many debates to be had (we have many of them here at Hillel). But AR 13-025 calls Israel colonialist, genocidal, and an apartheid state, ignoring the massacre of October 7th. This is not constructive. It does not reflect the respect that every student at Michigan deserves. It sends a message that the Jewish state is illegitimate and doesn't deserve to defend its people. Simply, it’s antisemitic.

Here's what you can do: Get Involved to Get Out the Vote. If you want to help get out the vote:

  • Simply reply to this email and tell me you want to get involved, or
  • Connect with Allison who will be leading our Vote Ambassadors team
  • Connect with Emma if you’re in Greek life and want to get out the vote
  • Connect with Rav Lisa if you’d like to talk through all of this and could use some emotional, mental, and spiritual support

If you have any questions, concerns, or complaints, please reply to this email -- and let's talk!
