Cooling Resources Available During Heat Wave

All residents are reminded that cooling resources are available to help them chill out in Spokane during heat waves, including the one predicted by the National Weather Service through Thursday.

Cooling areas

Six Spokane Public Library locations throughout the city and available to provide indoor cooling areas for anyone seeking relief from hot temperatures being forecast.

How you can help

The City is seeking donations of bottled water, Gatorade/Powerade, other caffeine-free hydration drinks, mini sunscreen products and single pack snacks for current and future extreme weather events. Those interested in donating please email the Emergency Management Department to arrange donations.

Public transportation options

Spokane Transit Authority is offering fare exceptions to riders going to and from a cooling space when the temperature is 95 degrees or above.

Heat wave resources

Gonzaga University’s Center for Climate, Society and the Environment lists regional cooling resources, including an interactive map of drinking fountains, cooling areas, splash pads, parks and pools.

Taking precautions

Residents are urged to drink water to stay hydrated, wear light-colored clothing, apply sunscreen and to not leave kids or pets in vehicles.

On the Bright Side

Congratulations to our Employee of the Quarter Shawna Ernst! Shawna is the Law Enforcement Technology and Operations Manager at the Spokane Police Department. She has been working diligently to improve the technology of the department, and working to update and purchase improved platforms. Shawna has spent many hours doing updates and making sure she isn’t disrupting peak times of use by SPD. She voluntarily takes on tasks because she has a dedication for the success of the TEAM.
