CAWA and TechForce Foundation Strike a New Collaboration for the Betterment of the Auto Care Industry |
CAWA and TechForce Foundation have formed a new strategic alliance to address the growth and support of America’s skilled technician workforce. The two not-for-profit organizations will collaborate and share resources to promote the technician profession with young people, connect industry volunteers with future techs and tech school programs, and spotlight the importance of respecting techs who keep America rolling.
“Our country needs skilled, qualified automotive technicians to keep our lives moving. Students who love problem-solving and working with their hands are longing to find an education and career that fits. For many, a 4-year university isn’t the path they want or need. Instead, they’d be most excited by a technical career,” shares Jennifer Maher, CEO of TechForce Foundation. “These days the auto tech profession offers a solid middle-class wage, the opportunity to live and work anywhere, and involvement in the fast-evolving, technology-rising mobility industry. Students are unaware of all their options and don’t always know how to navigate the career exploration pipeline. By forming this collaboration, CAWA and TechForce have combined the conduits through which we can reach, support, and connect aspiring tech students to their futures."
Representing the Automotive Parts Industry, Rodney Pierini the President & CEO of CAWA adds, “The Board of Directors unanimously supported this new collaboration with TechForce, and we are excited to contribute to promoting and growing the technician workforce as another contribution of the Association to the improvement of the auto care industry”.

Fuel for Thought: Waiting for Autonomy |
Five years ago, hype surrounding "autopilot" cars peaked. But S&P Global Mobility's updated forecast offers a reality check of careful, limited adoption of self-driving technology through 2035. A world of autonomous vehicles is likely to exist eventually, but for at least the next decade, that will be mostly in two very specific areas: geofenced robo-taxis operated by fleets in specific areas and hands-off systems with various safeguards in personal vehicles that require some form of driver engagement.
As for a "World of Tomorrow" self-driving vehicle where you and the family can sleep in your seats and wake up 200 miles away at Grandma's? The industry calls that "Level 5" autonomy, the highest level of vehicular autonomy defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). That idea will stay firmly in the distance for the foreseeable future, according to the latest forecast on vehicle autonomy by S&P Global Mobility.
The ability for a consumer to buy a car that will drive itself everywhere without the driver ready to take the wheel is unlikely to happen by 2035. Level 5 implementation of fully autonomous technology in the automotive retail fleet has zero representation before 2035 in the S&P Global Mobility forecast, "and probably for some time after that," said Jeremy Carlson, associate director for the autonomy practice at S&P Global Mobility. EV Impact on Aftermarket “Many Years Away”
New analysis reports that the predictions of EVs dominating U.S. roads are “overblown. “Much has been discussed about the impact of Electric Vehicles (EVs) on the new car and light truck market. However, little has been mentioned about the consequences of EVs for the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) aftermarket.
In its most recent analysis, Lang Marketing reports that the predictions of EVs dominating U.S. roads are “overblown” and that their consequences for the ICE car and light truck aftermarket will be limited for many years. Four factors are critical to aftermarket product volume: the number of vehicles in operation (VIO), their use (annual mileage), the VIO’s age profile, and the number of vehicles in specific age groups. To project the consequences of EVs for the ICE aftermarket, it is necessary to examine the four factors driving aftermarket product volume.
Here are key takeaways from the study. Source: aftermarket MATTERS

CAWA Supports the IFA Calls on Congress to Reject National Labor Relations Board’s Joint Employer Rule |
The International Franchise Association (IFA) today released the following statement on the final regulation issued by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) expanding joint employment between franchisors and franchisees. Today’s rule defines how brands and owners could be jointly responsible for the same employees under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), fundamentally upending the franchise business model. The rule would reduce the independence of franchise business owners, diminish franchisees’ equity in their businesses, and force franchisors to offer less support.
“Today’s final joint employer rule solidifies that this NLRB is fundamentally hostile to Main Street business owners,” said Michael Layman, IFA senior vice president for government relations and public affairs. “This overreaching and unworkable joint employment policy is designed to change the rules in the middle of the game for hundreds of thousands of franchise owners and turn them into middle managers in their own businesses. What’s worse, we have seen this misguided policy before and it resulted in hundreds of thousands in lost job opportunities, billions in increased costs for franchised business, and a doubling of lawsuits."

Domestic BEV OEMs – Be Very Afraid
China is well-positioned to flood the BEV market with low-priced BEVs. But will it undercut US and European vehicle OEMs? Do you remember Solyndra? In 2009, Solyndra received a $535 million U.S. Department of Energy loan guarantee, the first recipient in President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus program, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Their solar panels were to be the flagship of a government funded move to renewable power. Then reality set in. Chinese solar panel producers flooded the market with low priced solar panels, and Solyndra could not compete. In its bankruptcy, US taxpayers took a $528 million loss on the loan. I tell the Solyndra story because I think it might be a case of “I’ve seen that movie before” as we are watching the global market for battery electric cars. Can China do to the battery electric vehicle market what they did to solar? I fear the answer is yes. Read more here. Source: aftermarketNews and Derek Kaufman
