NEW IBERIA, La. --- As part of the American Sugar Cane League’s commitment to the students of our region as they learn about the industries that support our communities, the League has again presented the Bayou Teche Museum with an educational grant. The funds are earmarked for transportation and admission costs for student field trips to the Museum and have been embraced by Iberia Parish schools over the past three years.
The mission of the Bayou Teche Museum is to educate the public about the Bayou Teche and its environs, to preserve the history and culture of New Iberia, and to highlight the industries that have shaped the region, notably the Sugar Cane Industry which employs more than 19,000 and has an annual economic impact of about $4 billion to our State.
Guided tours can be adjusted to fit school schedules. An hour to 1.5 hour tour is suggested. The Museum is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but they do offer tours by appointment on others days.
About Bayou Teche Museum
The state-of-the-art museum with a permanent collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the region tells the story of a growing city, its people, culture and industry all centered around the "snake-like" curves of the Bayou Teche. The museum is home to George Rodrigue’s studio, which includes the painting he was working on before his 2013 death.
