Como Kindness: 2023 Thanksgiving Meals Fundraiser

The Como Community Council is once again working to support isolated neighborhood seniors this Thanksgiving. So, in partnership with the North End South Como Block Nurse Program, we have a goal of providing meals for 100 neighborhood seniors. How you can help is simple:

  • Make a financial donation. Every $12 you contribute buys one Thanksgiving meal: turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, vegetables, a roll and, of course, dessert.
  • Volunteer to deliver meals w/ Block Nurse Program. Reach out to Alaina Gall at alaina@necbnp.org or 651-489-4067.

Know Your Como: It takes a Village! - Give to the Max

Over the past year District 10 Como Community Council has had the privilege of working with many individual and group volunteers to plan and put on the major community events that are hosted each year. We have been hosting a major event in each of the four subdistricts so that we can encourage neighbors from the whole community to engage with each other and community partners that have vested interest in the district. We ask for your financial support to keep these events alive and growing!

During the May 13 “Pick Up and Party” event at Orchard Rec Center the community serviced the neighborhood by picking up trash after the long winter and enjoyed a FREE Community Meal. Your financial support will continue to allow these events to thrive! Read more...

Join Us Next Week For Something New

D10 Social - Wednesday - Nov. 8, 6pm

@ Half-Time Rec (1013 Front Ave)

Starting next week the Como Community Council is going to try putting down the gavel once a month for a social gathering. This agenda-free meet-up will vary in time and location, but will generally happen between our two monthly meetings on the second Wednesday each month. You will find the details here in the newsletter or on our website.

These events are open to all, we hope they'll provide an opportunity for D10 regulars, veterans, and newcomers to get to know one another better outside the confines of our formal meetings. No board business will be conducted at these meet-ups.

Join us next Wednesday, Nov. 8, 6pm at Half-Time Rec (1013 Front Ave), our table will be identified with some version of the D10 logo adjacent to this text. Come say hi and root for D10 Board Member and Neighborhood Relations Co-Chair Lauren's darts team!

The Leaves Are Everywhere: Como CURB Cleanup

Now through November 30, in front of your own home!

Como Community Council is again teamed up with the Capitol Region Watershed District for the Como Curb Cleanup. When it rains, leaves on streets release nutrients into the water that flows into storm drains and the lake. There it becomes food for invasive algae. Join 100+ neighbors in sweeping your curb once a week this fall to help keep Lake Como clean with this surprisingly effective effort.

Signing up to be an official participant helps us track results and helps (a lot) to support future efforts! You can also represent with a cool Curb Cleanup Lawn Sign this year if you register!

Tips to avoid a wait at yard waste sites

Ramsey County yard waste sites experience heavy traffic during the fall. To avoid a wait, consider the following tips:

  • Visit yard waste sites on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays. Avoid the first hour of opening since there is almost always a rush. If you need to go on a weekend, Saturday mornings between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. can be less busy.
  • Avoid fall weekends with warm, dry weather.
  • Visit the sites during cold or rainy weather or when the Vikings are playing.
  • If possible, hold on to your collected yard waste until the end of the season. Traffic at the sites decreases significantly after the third weekend in November.

Please note that off-season hours are December through March, and yard waste sites are only open on weekends during those months.

View yard waste site locations and hours

Yard waste site policy: Dumping trailers

Just a friendly reminder that mechanical or hydraulic dumping trailers and dump trucks are not allowed at Ramsey County yard waste sites - this includes both residential and commercial equipment.

Dumping trailers and dump trucks pose safety and contamination concerns and are primarily used by commercial services, which are not permitted at county yard waste sites. Read the Policy.

If you have a dumping trailer or dump truck, you can use a commercial yard waste site.

Fall Yard Waste Disposal

Turn your pumpkins into compost! Drop off your pumpkins at a Ramsey County yard waste site for free. Remove candles, paint, glitter, or other decorations before disposing at a yard waste site. You can also bring leftover hay bales and corn stalks (no string, ribbon, or other decorations) to be composted. For more details, visit www.RamseyRecycles.com/yardwaste

Please remember that pumpkins are NOT allowed at the Beulah Ave. Food Scraps site by McMurray Fields, it's more holiday cheer than our bins can handle, take them to the yard waste sites!
