Thanksgiving Vacation

ASOP will be closed from Wednesday, November 23, through Sunday, November 27, for Thanksgiving. The school reopens on Monday, November 28.

Bee Farm/Store Adventure

Students in the Financial Literacy and Intro to Business classes recently went to Tony's Bee Store to learn about the business of bees. They learned about hives, honey and the products that can be created from bees: bee's wax candles, honey sticks and soap. Students also had hands-on experience making some of the items and seeing the bees.

Three Teachers Attend Conference

Joy, Kyle, and Liz recently attended a conference about classroom management put on by Greenbush, The Education Service Center. The instructors emphasized different teaching techniques that validated the process already implemented at ASOP.

"For example, they told us to get to really know your students," Liz said, "so you can teach to the way they learn."

Internet, Phone and School Safety

ASOP strives to keep the school a safe environment for students and staff. With this in mind, Officer Bill Koehn of the Overland Park Police Department came to ASOP twice in October.

Officer Koehn spoke to students about internet and phone safety.  He discussed issues that can cause problems for teens and others when they post online or send messages.

He returned to the school to speak to teachers and staff about school safety during the professional development held in October.

Congratulations Michael And Andy!

Congratulations to ASOP drama teachers, Michael and Andrew Grayman-Parkhurst, who were honored October 1 as the ‘Organization of the Year’ by ‘The Whole Person’ for Spinning Tree Theatre’s dedication to working with young actors of all abilities.

Meet Moose!!

ASOP is glad to welcome Moose to the school's staff. He has completed his initial therapy dog tests and will continue training for the next several months

Moose came to school for the first time on October 14, to join the staff professional development day. He will start coming to school several days a week.

When he is not at school, Moose lives with his human companion, ASOP Principal Annie. Moose is part St. Bernard and part Golden Retriever. He is just a puppy, only six months old.

We were all sad last summer when Harrison 'crossed the rainbow bridge'. Now we have a new puppy who staff and students can love and be loved in return.

Pumpkin Palooza:

Community Service

Once again, ASOP art students decorated pumpkins for the Sunflower House' Pumpkin Palooza fundraiser.   Sunflower House is a local not for profit that helps children who are victims of abuse. Students decorated 20 pumpkins of all sizes for the event which was held on Saturday, October 15.  Thanks to Denise for arranging pick up and delivery of the pumpkins.

Student Council News

Student Council's first activity was Spirit Week held the week of October 10-14. Students and staff had the opportunity to be comfy on Monday's pajama day; decide which was better the past or the future on Tuesday; be international on Wednesday; finally on Thursday to chose between Soccer Mom or BBQ Dad.

Each day all the students who participated put their names in a drawing to win a $20 Amazon gift card. All students and staff enjoyed a pizza party to end Spirit Week.
