INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL PTSA NEWS
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello Everyone,

I have so enjoyed writing these brief messages every week. A BIG THANK YOU to people I would meet and say, "I recognize you from MM." I like to hold the view of a glass half full and extend that view to our community. International is such a special school for our students, and by upholding that view to them, I think we make their time there more positive.

Our PTSA board was an outstanding group of creative minds, motivated workers, and team builders. Let me thank Phil Block, Judy Cam, Emily Castle, Qiong Chen, Honglian Gao, Renuka Getchell, Vera Ho, Jennifer Li, Jeffrey Lu, Li Lu, Stephen Miller, Melissa Richardson, Jessica Smiddy, Yuting Zhu, Senior Committee Chairs, Edward Chung, Masako Tamura, Nate Bloch, Russell White, Mary Pyrah, Ellen Stone, Jill Follett, Thyda Tsai, and lastly, my family. This year, we funded, supported, cried, and cheered for this incredible community. Thank you for your support.

Thank you,
JOIN THE MONDAY MESSENGER TEAM: BE THE VOICE OF OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY!

Do you have a passion for writing and a desire to make a difference in our school community? We're looking for dedicated individuals to join the 2023-2024 Monday Messenger team at International School. We're seeking liaisons who will be responsible for specific schools or community partners within our district. Your role will involve reading their newsletters and checking their websites regularly to identify any relevant events or opportunities for our students and families. By joining our team, you'll ensure that our students and families are well-informed about the incredible opportunities available to them.

If you're ready to be the voice of our school community and help us keep our kids and families informed, join the Monday Messenger team today! Together, let's create a vibrant and connected environment where every student has the chance to thrive. If interested, or if you have any questions, contact us at news@isptsa.org.

NATIONAL PTA NEWS
NATIONAL PTA URGES CONGRESS TO END GUN VIOLENCE AND RESTORE THE FEDERAL ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN

May 24 marked one year after the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde County, Texas that claimed the lives of 19 children and two educators. School communities continue to face the daily threat of gun violence and far too many communities and families nationwide are forever altered due to the trauma caused by similar events.

We can no longer wait for Congress to act; NOW is the time to protect America’s children and families from the trauma of bearing witness to, or being injured in violent events involving assault-style weapons designed for military use when students should feel the safest while in school.

June is Gun Violence Prevention Month! Contact your members of Congress today to urge them to support legislation prohibiting older youth from purchasing military-style weapons and restoring the federal Assault Weapons Ban. Read the National PTA's Position Statement on Gun Safety and Violence Prevention here. Questions? Email the National PTA.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Mr. Miller's two classes of seniors in US Government/Senior Project traveled to Bellevue HS last week to participate in a mock UN Climate Conference with BHS students. Three groups of IS students competed in two competitions, and IS students completed a clean sweep of all the awards. As shown in the picture, the group of Arvin Pouresfandiary Cham, Ryan Lee, Teoman Toprak, and Ariel Chang came in 1st place for their proposed solution to combating climate change. The group of McKenzie Toomey, Aelie Howell, Margie McKnight, Zaira Ganga, and Hayl Cowan came in a very close 2nd place. Finally, the group of Rachel He, Tiffany Choi, Sofia Rudic, and Erica Lee won the poster competition for their representation of climate change issues in Thailand.

Overall, the panel of judges was impressed with IS students' presentation skills and understanding of issues and solutions related to climate change. Let's hope some members of the IS Class of 2023 will eventually dedicate their professional work to solving climate change. Questions? Email Stephen Miller.

We extend our congratulations to the 2023 International School's accepted experiment proposals for Cubes in Space! Below, you'll find the list of accepted Cubes and their corresponding proposals. LOST AND FOUND LAST CALL!

Parents! Students! Everyone! Please examine these photos closely for your lost items! This is our last chance to try to unite lost items with their owners before we donate or dispose of them at the end of the school year. All of these items are currently in the front office – just stop in and let us know what belongs to you.
In addition to our smaller lost items that we have in the office, there are two more areas to find and claim your missing goods! We have jackets-a-plenty hanging in the commons area. We also have a table chock full of water bottles, food containers, bags, and more. Please have your students check these areas, or come in and peruse for yourself. At the end of the school year, we will donate all unclaimed lost and found items. Questions? Contact Kyla Carlson.

BEST FIREWORKS SHOWS AND 4TH OF JULY FESTS AROUND SEATTLE AND PUGET SOUND

There are so many amazing activities in and around Bellevue to help celebrate the 4th of July. Due to the sheer number, I decided the best way to get the word out is to simply link one webpage that shows multiple activities. I wish all of you and your families a happy and safe 4th of July! Questions? Contact the individual cities that are hosting the events.
SUMMER ACTIVITIES

School's out for summer! My go-to resource for events happening around the Puget Sound area is the Family Fun Calendar put out by Parent Map. Instead of listing all of the interesting activities that might appeal to our teens and their families, I decided to post the calendar. Find fun things to do all summer long by using the filters along the left side to help you target those activities that appeal to your family the most. I hope you all have an amazing summer! See you in the fall! Questions? Contact the individuals hosting the event you are interested in.
