Flapjacks & Flamingos

Ever since the Flamingo exhibit opened in June of 2016, greater flamingos have been greeting guests as they enter the zoo.

This is an accreditation year for our zoo and the rigorous process is in full swing. On July 24^th and 25^th a three-person inspection team, formed by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), was at our zoo doing a thorough inspection. That visit concluded with the team submitting a formal report to us and AZA, the accrediting agency. We are now required to submit a formal written response before appearing at a hearing in September, at the AZA annual conference in Columbus, Ohio. The outcome of the hearing will determine accreditation status.

Fewer than 10% of the approximately 2,800 animal exhibitors licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture are AZA accredited! Miller Park Zoo has been accredited for over 30 years and remains committed to meeting or exceeding the established standards and best practices of the profession. 

Animal Happenings at the Zoo

The Mulefoot hogs remain separated and under veterinary care for hoof/gait-related issues. Rupert is receiving physical therapy every day as the staff works diligently to help both animals recover.

New additions and planned animal arrivals include:

• A new Callimico monkey was successfully introduced in the Rainforest,
• New goats were introduced in the Children’s Zoo bringing the total to eight.
• Crested Wood Partridge chicks born in the Rainforest are doing well,
• We have received Species Survival Program (SSP) recommendations and plans to bring in a male Anteater, male Pudu, and a male DeBrazza’s monkey. Also recommended is a Chinese Crocodile lizard.

Registration will be opening soon for the Fall and Winter Classes and Camps.
