Message From our President

Workplace Eye Wellness, Eye Donor Awareness, Women’s History Month

As more and more of us are working at home, not traveling to work, we spend more time in front of the computer. Unfortunately, it is creating a new era of increased near-point stress. This digital eye strain or asthenopia can lead to headaches, dry eyes, and muscle spasms. Look at the computer's ergonomics from Between 18 (laptop) to 28 inches (desktop). Coupled with either AR-coated progressive lenses or single-vision computer glasses, It's the first step to removing the stress. The next step is the 420 rule, (not what you think:-). The new rule is every 20 minutes look 20 feet away for 20 seconds and get outside for 20 minutes four times a day. This is especially good for children to get sunlight onto the retina, releasing dopamine and slowing myopia onset. Also, adults need to get a little exercise and vitamin D instead of sitting in a chair all day.

Also, people working in construction jobs, road work, or any factory work that requires safety glasses should get them customized for the distances they are working on. Also, custom safety lenses are necessary if they are working around bright lights, gases, or anything extraordinary.

Eye Donor Awareness Month

And remember to sign the back of your license (go to DMV or iPhone health app) because there are people on a waiting list for corneas that need relief from keratoconus and a myriad of other corneal complications.

Women's History Month

March 2, 1955, Claudette Colvin was the first Black young lady (15 years old) who refused to give up her seat on a bus to a White person nine months before Rosa Parks.

March 10 is Harriet Tubman Day (born Araminta Ross, c. March 1822[1] – March 10, 1913) was an American abolitionist and social activist. Born into chattel slavery, Tubman escaped and subsequently made 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 similarly enslaved people, including family and friends,[2] using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. During the American Civil War, she served as an armed scout and spy for the Union Army. In her later years, Tubman was an activist in the movement for women's suffrage. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harriet_Tubman)

From Dr. Maya Angelou, one of the most celebrated poets and activists, to Aretha Franklin, "The Queen of Soul," one of the most awarded singing artists and civil rights activists, Black women have influenced our history with a prodigious path of positive progress.

March forward,

Dr E. Larry Jones
