November Newsletter

Note from Becky: Thank you for your patience in waiting for the November edition of the Advocacy Newsletter. I wanted to make sure you received the most current information as we approach another potential government shutdown on November 18.

Federal Update

The House of Representatives passed what is referred to as a ‘clean’ continuing resolution, or clean CR. This means that there were no harmful cuts or amendments attached, and the CR will maintain existing funding levels. This CR is different in that there are two new funding deadlines. The programs that impact our work and the anti-hunger space fall under the Agriculture appropriations bill, and that funding is now set to expire on January 19.

As of the time this was written on Wednesday, November 15, the Senate is expected to take up the legislation and vote either this evening or tomorrow, Thursday November 16, and then the bill will go to the President for his signature, avoiding a shutdown.

Attached to the CR is a negotiated, one-year extension of the Farm Bill. As a reminder, the Farm Bill expired on September 30, 2023. This extension would set a new expiration date of September 30, 2024.

Assuming everything falls into place in the coming hours, there will be no lapse in government funding this weekend and we’ll have a one-year extension of the Farm Bill.

In the event that things change, you will hear from me next week with information and resources.

Advocacy Resources

We’ve added to our advocacy resources!

You can find copies of the documents we’re sharing with our elected officials in Congress about the Farm Bill, including a Farm Bill priorities one-pager, a SNAP one-pager, and a TEFAP one-pager. We also have posters that you can print out and have on hand at your agency encouraging neighbors to sign the Feeding New York State Farm Bill petition. Use the buttons below to access these resources.

Action Alert

If you have not already, please use this link from our friends at FRAC to urge your Members of Congress to increase funding for WIC. Caseloads have grown, and Congress needs to make additional investments to continue meeting the need.
