Another serendipitous Vermont country drive had us stopping first for quail eggs—Kay can always find an amusing use for these silly things, other than a steak tartare garnish. These “egg kiosks” can be found all over the countryside, but one cannot be oblivious to the immediate surroundings—it’s so easy to pass by without noticing the inherent humor in everything. Two miles later, we stopped for raspberry jam!

Just over the Vermont border in Cornish, New Hampshire, is where, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of America's foremost sculptors, summered and spent final years. Tour the property, and see more than one hundred of his remarkable works. His first major commission in NYC is considered one of his most important works, Admiral Farragut (1881) still stands in New York’s Madison Square Park.

The Emily Post Institute
Waterbury, Vermont
"That’s a caricature of Emily Post on the cover of Vanity Fair Magazine (December 1933), an American authority on social behavior, relaxing at home. Her private behavior is portrayed as contrary to her public etiquette advice." Library of Congress
Caricaturist, Miguel Covarrubias, delightfully captures Emily in this compromising position. Covarrubias, was one of the most famous artists of his day, but you’ve likely never heard of him—but, you have heard of Al Hirschfeld, who studied under Covarrubias, and shared a studio with him in 1924.

Celebrating Some Anniversaries...
Mary Lou and Scott Purtell, Pond Mountain Inn’s longest-staying guests, remembered that we are celebrating two milestones this year. First, in April, we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary, and second, in October, we celebrate ten years at Pond Mountain Inn. Thank you, Mary Lou and Scott, for making this a very special day…
We have so many to thank over the years—our friends, and family in the U.S., Asia, and Canada— we cherish all the memories and experiences here in Vermont. We have much to be thankful, and we thank everyone for all that you’ve given us. Thank you.

Robert Frost Stone House Museum
Shaftsbury, Vermont
We stopped here first, before spending the day in Bennington. The Robert Frost Stone House Museum is a literary landmark located only minutes away from Frost's gravesite in Old Bennington, which we also visited. Frost resided in the house from 1920 to 1929, during which time he composed many of the pieces that became part of "New Hampshire", his first Pulitzer Prize winning volume that included "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." The house, built circa 1769, has changed little since Frost's time. The house sits on seven acres and still retains some of Frost's original apple trees. Content largely taken from the website.

Now, we’re not necessarily James Bond fans, however after seeing this Official Collection of Original James Bond Vehicles, we have committed to watching all 25 movies. One movie a week just about covers the 25 weeks of winter here in Vermont. We are further motivated after being gifted the entire James Bond Collection! Looks like we’re beginning with Dr. No...
In all seriousness, this exhibition is truly spectacular, whether you’re a fan or not. The website photographs are amazing! Another must visit, but not to hurry, you have plenty of time—the exhibition is on display through January 31, 2024. We'll be back again...

The Most Beautiful Church...

The Old First Church is just a ¼ mile from The Bennington Battle Monument, and is included in our Southern Vermont & The Berkshires Day Trip Itinerary. We were incredibly fortunate to have met the church historian, and one of the church’s great descendants—we not only had the entire church to ourselves, but we gained great insight into the church’s history. Our first visit to the Bennington Museum could not have come at a better time… For the Love of Vermont, is currently on exhibition until November 5, 2023. More than 200 works of art that capture Vermont’s unique character, people, traditions and landscape. Additionally, the museum has an incredible collection of Vermont artifacts, and letters written by George Washington. We’re visiting again in a few weeks.

The current exhibition is titled, Recent Acquisitions: 2016-1023, features more than thirty additions to the museum’s permanent collection. A museum that we do not frequently visit, but this does not diminish its importance. The permanent installations of antiquities, Asian art, American and European paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century are on view at all times.

A Little Local Humor...
It’s suggested that this road sign was installed at the intersection of Vermont Route 30 and River Road in Pawlet, Vermont, circa 1890-1920. Before National Prohibition in 1920, local option laws allowed towns to decide whether to be “wet”, and allow the sale of alcohol or “dry” and prohibit it. Prohibitionary laws were not well enforced, and the running joke was that the entire state was “damp.” You’ll find this sign on the second floor of the Bennington Museum, just behind the Martin Wasp luxury automobile.

Historic Saratoga Race Course
If you ask someone who’s spent a lifetime in the northeast, they’ll tell you one of the top ten places to visit in the summertime is Saratoga Springs. Best known for the “mineral springs” and Baths. However, the Race Track should not be missed…Saratoga Race Course has been in use almost every year since 1864, and Sports Illustrated once rated it the #10 sports venue of the 20th century. It’s a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon, then dinner in town makes for a perfect day… See Our Saratoga Springs Trip Itinerary, for more.
