Know What Steps to Take When Accidents Happen on the Roadways
Imagine that you are driving on a road, and suddenly, you become involved in a minor fender bender or a crash. Do you know how to keep yourself and others safe? There are important steps that every driver should take.

If possible, you will want to move your vehicle away from the travel lanes and off to the side of the road. While it might be necessary to exchange insurance information with a fellow driver, you should always be aware of your surroundings. So, stay put and buckled-in until you can assess the situation. Try not to let the adrenaline or nerves rattle you.

For additional tips on how to stay safe, click on the image above to watch the fourth video from our Safe Driving series that we are debuting this month. You can also visit the U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's online library--it is jam-packed full of resources.
A Heartfelt Farewell
After more than three-and-a-half years of leading our organization, Vince Valdes, Executive Director, will retire this fall.

Valdes came to our organization at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, a tumultuous time for everyone both personally and professionally.
Despite the many challenges that the pandemic brought, he led our team with compassion, conviction, and clarity.

Additionally, he made many strategic improvements that enhanced our organization's internal operations, and chartered a path forward that will lead to future successes. One of the improvements he spearheaded was our organization's recent move to The Terminal in the Strip District.

“Leading SPC has been one of the highlights of my career,” said Valdes. “I've been fortunate to work alongside talented and dedicated professionals, and I know that the hard work this team does each and every single day positively impacts our local communities.”

As the federally certified Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), Local Development District (LDD), and Economic Development District (EDD), our organization works with local, state, and federal partners to plan for the continued growth of this region.

Valdes and his wife will relocate to Norfolk, Virginia where they plan to spend a lot of time with their four adult children and extended family members.
Future Funding Opportunities
PennDOT is accepting applications for the FY24/25 Multimodal Transportation Fund through 4 p.m. on Nov. 13. This program is designed to provide financial assistance to municipalities, councils of governments, businesses, economic development organizations, public transportation agencies, and ports and rail freight entities to improve transportation assets that enhance communities, pedestrian safety, and transit revitalization. As the region’s MPO, we will provide comment on these applications, and encourage prospective applicants to meet with our team members and their respective PennDOT District office to discuss scope during project development.

As part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is accepting applications for its Electric Vehicle Charger Reliability and Accessibility Accelerator Program through Nov. 13. Ten percent of NEVI Formula Program is set-aside to make grants available to states and localities that require additional assistance to strategically deploy electric vehicle charging infrastructure. To make the current EV charging network more reliable, the first round of funding made available will focus on repairing or replacing non-operational EV chargers. You can find a map of these eligible stations here.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Thriving Communities Program (TCP) is currently accepting applications. The TCP aims to ensure that disadvantaged communities adversely or disproportionately impacted by environmental, climate, and human health policy outcomes have the technical tools and organizational capacity to compete for federal aid and deliver quality infrastructure projects that enable their communities and neighborhoods to thrive. The call for Letters of Interest (LOI) from communities seeking support from the program is open until Nov. 15, while the NOFO for Capacity Builders is open until Nov. 28. Applicants can find examples of projects and previous awards here.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has issued a rolling NOFO for the Large Bridge Project portion of the Bridge Investment Program. Applications for Large Bridge Project Grants (>$100 million will be accepted through Nov. 27 for FY 23-24 funding. The Bridge Investment Program is a competitive, discretionary program that focuses on existing bridges to reduce the overall number of bridges in poor condition, or in fair condition at risk of falling into poor condition.

If your government entity or organization is interested in pursuing funding under these grants or other opportunities and has questions or requests for letters of support, please contact Lillian Gabreski. Lillian is our Manager of Sponsored Programs Development and she can be reached at [email protected]
