MERCY

Oh have mercy….how many times have my actions, words behavior, thoughts, my look or gestures, my driving (had to put that in) subtlety and sometimes not so subtlety been unkind to someone? I know that “sin” is an uncomfortable subject and no one wants to talk about them or admit that they have committed them. (And sometimes it is the little ones than can do the most harm to others and even to ourselves.) Whether we admit it or not we are all a sinful bunch. But God, in his mercy has forgiven us through the blood of his son Jesus. And our slate each day is wiped clean by God’s righteousness and forgiveness.

The Bible tells us that God is absolutely holy and pure, and when we rebel against Him by doing wrong, we deserve only His judgment. And sometimes His judgment comes almost immediately (at least in part). If, example, I hate others, I will pay a price for my sin. Sin always has consequences always.

BUT God also loves us and is MERCIFUL toward us. If He weren’t, we’d have no hope for His forgiveness. But we do have hope—and the reason is because God has provided the way for us to be saved from His judgment.

That way is Jesus Christ, who came down from Heaven and took upon Himself the judgment we deserve. We deserve God’s judgment for our sins—but by His death on the cross Christ took upon Himself the judgment we deserve. He died in our place. And HIS mercy endures FOREVER!

I love that this verse below is repeated; for repeats mean that the thought is important and is a promise and standard to live by.

God’s mercies are new every morning because each day only has enough mercy in it for that day. God appoints every day’s troubles. And God appoints every day’s mercies. In the life of his children, they are perfectly appointed. Jesus said, “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matthew 6:34). Every day has its own trouble. Every day has its own mercies. Each is new every morning.

But we often tend to despair when we think that we may have to bear tomorrow’s load on today’s resources. God wants us to know: We won’t. Today’s mercies are for today’s troubles. Tomorrow’s mercies are for tomorrow’s troubles.

Lamentations 3:22–23The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases…his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.(in Christ, the steadfast love of God for you will never cease. Never. His mercies will never come to an end. Never. They will be new every morning, and he will be faithful to bring them to you.)

We’ve all been blessed to receive mercy at one time or another when we needed it most. It may have been that you were forgiven for hurting somebody’s feelings or betraying a friend’s trust. Or perhaps someone came alongside you in a difficult season, offering support, prayer, or a kind word. This is mercy played out. When people choose to be kind, compassionate, or forgiving, there’s a ripple effect that extends beyond these small graces and impacts the way we interact with God and the people around us.

God is “merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding” ….God doesn’t just choose to be these things—they’re integral to who He is. And He always wants our good. We have the choice each day to choose mercy over judgement and when we do, we are passing that miraculous gift that God, through his love, gives to us each day for that day and more for the next…. It is a forever gift and it is one that we should thank him for each day. Our sins they are many his mercy is more.
