HLSP News - Summer 2023

Brought to you by the Hospital Library Services Program (HLSP). This is a Newsletter for the Health Science Librarians, HLSP Liaisons, and Health Care Providers in South Central New York State.

Welcome, Summer!

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Summer 2023 edition of HLSP News. As we navigate the heat, humidity, and wildfire smoke that have become the norm for this Summer, I bring your attention to new and exciting things happening with HLSP and SCRLC.

First, we are now providing to all HLSP members subscriptions to STAT! Ref and the STAT PEARLS Quiz bank for NLEX - RN. The STAT! Ref subscription is a renewal of what we offered to members a few years ago while the STAT PEARLS Quiz Bank is a new service. You can learn more about these two resources below. Also, don't forget that we provide a subscription to New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) for all HLSP members.

Second, the Health, Wellness and Hospital Libraries Lunch and Learn series that began in June with Matt Roslund will continue through the Summer and into the Fall with our next program on the topic of telehealth to take place on August 8. Read below for details about the program and look for more programs through the year.

Third, the HLSP funding has been received! Grant funding levels will remain the same as last year. Invoices for membership dues have been sent out from our Fiscal Services office. Dues will need to be paid before we can send your grant funding. For more information about the grant funding, please see below.

This volume of HLSP News also provides information about Summer health observances; a reminder about our Telehealth/Digital Equity Kits; details about the HLSP Grant Program to prepare for the pending grant cycle; and some upcoming continuing education webinars and recordings.

If you have any questions about SCRLC, HLSP or anything in this volume of HLSP News, please email me at cbrown@scrlc.org. And if you would like to stay informed about HLSP news in between the quarterly editions, please submit a request to join our HLSP listserv.

All the Best,

STAT! Ref and STAT PEARLS

As of July 1, we provide our HLSP members with two additional electronic resources:

  • STAT! Ref journals
  • a Quiz bank through STAT PEARLS

These resources expand on the current electronic resource offered to all HLSP members, which is the online New England Journal of Medicine.

STAT! Ref is an intuitive full-text resource that enables users to cross-search evidence-based and authoritative healthcare references in seconds. Our subscription includes 14 journal titles that cover many areas of medicine including nursing, internal medicine, critical care, cardiology, infectious disease, and drug information. All HLSP members have access to this resource. If you are not able to access it, please let Christine know so you and your providers can start benefiting from this resource.

STAT PEARLS provides Quiz Banks for many medical exams. We have subscribed to the NCLEX - RN exam. This Quiz Bank includes more than 4,000 multiple choice questions in the bank and articles from PubMed are used to support the questions. The questions have been selected to simulate a real exam and designed to help students achieve top scores. All member hospitals have access to this new service so please share with your providers who are interested in this service. And if you're not able to access this service, please let Christine know so you and your providers will have access as quickly as possible.

If you haven't already taken advantage of these new resources, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible. They are designed to provide information to providers to improve the level of care for patients. If you have any questions or are experiencing difficulty access these resources, please reach out to Christine for details and information on how to access each resource.

Health, Wellness, and Hospital Libraries Lunch And Learn Series

We successfully launched our new Health, Wellness, and Hospital Libraries Lunch and Learn series on June 6 with a presentation by Matthew Roslund and his journey to become the Medical Librarian at Bassett Medical Center. If you missed this program, you are able view the recording anytime.

We will continue the Lunch and Learn series with a program on telehealth to be held online at noon on August 8 where you can learn about telehealth topics ranging from provider and patient considerations during the visit (including privacy and quality considerations), use case examples and specific room resign highlights, during an open discussion around the various technology options and workflow considerations. Reid Plimpton from the Northeast Telehealth Resource Center will tell us about his work to help establish a similar level of footing for all attendees as they prepare to enter the exciting next phase of telehealth implementation.

Additional programming on other topics will be announced in the near future. We're looking at a number of topics as potential programs including tick born illness; AI in healthcare including medical libraries; QA in hospitals; credentialing of medical providers and new medical advances among other topics. If there is a topic that you would like to see presented at an upcoming lunch and learn, please let Christine know.

Registration for the August 8 Lunch and Learn is available at our website. Please contact cbrown@scrlc.org if you have any questions, thoughts or comments about the Health and Wellness Lunch and Learn series or about the August program.

Summer and Autumn Health Observances

There are numerous diseases and other health conditions that are observed through designated days, weeks, and months with the designation providing an opportunity for learning about and advocating for a specific disease or health condition. Below are a few monthly observances for August, September, October, and November (to help you plan!).

August

National Immunization Awareness Month

The National Immunization Awareness Month (NAIM), was established to highlight the importance of vaccinations for people of all ages. As people prepare for returning to school, keep in mind that checking on all family member vaccinations is a good idea to assure the health of all family members. The CDC has information about vaccinations for parents and medical providers.

September

Healthy Aging Month

September is Heathy Aging month. It was started when baby boomers began reaching 50 years of age and spreads the message that a healthier lifestyle can be adopted at any age. SCRLC has an aging population, so this month is particularly important for people in our area. National Today shares information and activities that support healthy Aging.

October

Health Literacy Month

October is Health Literacy Month and National Today determined that more than 40% of the US population experiences difficulty obtaining, processing, and understanding health information. This difficulty negatively impacts a person's ability to make informed healthcare decisions. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides information about improving health literacy for individuals and for organizations. We will be providing a webinar on health literacy in October.

National Medical Librarian Month

October is also National Medical Librarian Month and it's recognized by the Medical Library Association (MLA). The goal is to remind everyone about the important role that health information professionals play in improving healthcare for all.

November

American Diabetes Month

November is American Diabetes Month and it's a time to raise awareness of the disease and how to combat it. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a good resource for information on managing diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) also shares information about diabetes.

For additional information on these and other awareness months, weeks and days, please visit the HealthFinder.gov list of National Health Observances and take steps to raise awareness of health and wellness issues.

Telehealth in Libraries

As stated above, the next Health, Wellness, and Hospital Libraries Lunch and Learn program is scheduled for August 8 and the focus is on telehealth and how to use it to improve access to health care in rural settings. As a reminder, SCRLC provided 19 Telehealth Kits to 19 public libraries in our region. The kits were designed to help community members who would otherwise be unable to connect with their healthcare providers or to participate in support groups and they can be checked out from the library or used onsite.  Each kit contains a Chromebook, mouse, hotspot, and headset. Because not every household has paper and pens on hand, notepads and pens were also included. Finally, a user survey and information about accessing MedlinePlus are also included in each kit.

Please reach out to Christine for any flyers you would like so you can share it with your providers.

Here is a list of the libraries that received the SCRLC telehealth kits and the village/town the library is located in if it's not clear from the name:

  • Sidney Memorial Public Library
  • Stamford Village Library
  • Village Library of Cooperstown
  • Your Home Public Library (Johnson City)
  • Huntington Memorial Library (Oneonta)
  • Mary Wilcox Memorial Library (Whitney Point)
  • Dundee Library
  • Steele Memorial Library, Chemung County Library District
  • Watkins Glen Library
  • Dormann Library (Bath)
  • Friendship Free Library
  • Whitesville Library
  • Springport Free Library (Union Springs)
  • Weedsport Library
  • Cortland Free Library
  • Edith B Ford Memorial Library
  • Dryden Library
  • Candor Library
  • Groton Public Library

New England Journal of Medicine

A Benefit of HLSP Membership

Our new subscriptions for Stat! products were outlined above. Don't forget that we offer the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) subscription for all our HLSP members. Our usage numbers remain low, and we ask that you share the existence of the subscription with your providers including nurses. NEJM has been long recognized throughout the world as an important source of the latest medical information and includes peer-reviewed research, literature reviews, and clinical trial information. If you or your providers aren't sure how to access NEJM, please contact Christine at cbrown@scrlc.org so we can work through any access issues.

HLSP Grant Program

July 1st was the beginning of SCRLC's new fiscal year and so we also begin a new year for the HLSP Grant Program. We just received the HLSP Funding and the grant applications will be sent to you soon. Funding levels have remained the same as last year.

As a reminder, the funds must be used for hospital library items and services that must be available to all users of the hospital library system. The users include all medical providers and any administrators in the hospital. The program is designed to enhance hospital libraries' ability to improve patient care and not to supplement the resources of an individual.

So, the funds can be used to purchase item(s) (such as a book(s)) or to pay for a library service such as ClinicalKey as long as the item(s) or service(s) are available in the same way using the same processes and procedures that are used for other library items. Likewise, the HLSP grant funds may be used for a subscription to an electronic journal when the journal is available to all individuals who have access to other library materials. Please let Christine know if you have any questions.

Continuing Education

How to Apply for NNLM Funding

How to Apply for NNLM Funding is a 1-hour live webinar worth 1 MLA Continuing Education credit. Designed for those who are specifically interested in applying for NNLM funding. This class will look at all the components of an NNLM funding application, as well as the level of detail required for a successful proposal. Each component of the NNLM grant writing process will be addressed, including documenting the need, identifying the target population, writing measurable objectives, developing a work plan, an evaluation plan, and a dissemination plan. September 28 at 2:00.

Approaches to Centering Equity in Health Communication Research and Practice

The hard truths of the pandemic — along with years of injustice and inequity experienced by historically marginalized and underrepresented communities — has positioned health communication at a crossroads. We have relied on traditional communication and marketing "best practices" that do not offer much opportunity for advocacy and are insufficient to move the needle on health disparities. To make progress, we must view diversity, equity, and inclusion not just through the lens of people, but also through the lens of processes. October 4 at 2:00 pm

Effective Health Communication and Health Literacy: Understanding the Connection

How are health communication and health literacy connected? How can you be more effective in providing health information to consumers, patients, clients, library patrons, and your community? This 1 hour webinar introduces the concepts of health literacy and health communication, outlines components of clear health communication, and identifies online resources from NLM, government agencies and other recognized resources for health literacy and health communication. October 25 at 2:00.

The Medical Library Association (MLA) is offering the following CE classes which are scheduled to take place in August, September, October and November of this year:

Embracing Universal Course Design to Improve Accessibility & Inclusiveness

Accessible courses and content that give all learners an opportunity to succeed are a responsibility of everyone involved in course design and teaching. Learn how you can create universally accessible content, promote student engagement with your online courses, and be able to use your knowledge to advocate and become a leader for ensuring inclusive and accessible content in your organization.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a popular and powerful approach to creating clear, accessible content that complies with national ADA laws and fosters inclusivity. UDL skills enable you to create content for the widest audience that requires little retrofitting.

Keeping It Private: Supporting Research Privacy and De-Identification of Shared Data

The NIH data management and sharing requirements, HIPAA, IRBs, and general research ethical standards all have privacy requirements. But many health sciences librarians and even seasoned researchers and compliance officers are unfamiliar with the de-identification techniques necessary to meet requirements for public data sharing and multi-institutional research collaborations. This webinar offers you an opportunity to acquire data privacy skills and knowledge that can make you a valued privacy consultant and trainer in your institution.

NOTE: There is a charge for each MLA CE class with a discounted price for members. SCRLC may be able to pay for your registration for MLA programs so keep that option in mind for these or any other courses on the MLA website. Check with Christine for more information.
