Reduce Food Waste This Holiday Season

Prevent food waste this holiday season! When planning your gatherings with friends and family, start with these simple steps:

  1. Know what's in your pantry and fridge so you can use up what you have before buying more.
  2. Create a meal plan and grocery list and buy only what you need when cooking special holiday meals. A tip is to use a tool like the "Save the Food" Guest-imator that could help you decide how much food to get based on the number of people you are serving,
  3. Check with your guests to see if they would like to take home leftovers and have reusable containers on hand, or save and reuse durable takeout containers.

Being conscious of what, how much, and how it's purchased will help you reduce food waste overall.

Tip: Pay attention to what you throw out often and see how you can prevent that waste in the future. Do you find yourself throwing out a half-full bundle of spinach often? Next time eat what you can while it's fresh, then freeze the rest for smoothies and cooked dishes!

Lastly, if you have any leftover canned foods or perishables, please donate them to a local food rescue organization.

Upcoming Events

Join us at the EcoHarvest Festival on Sunday, November 12th from 10am-2pm at Sowing Seeds of Change Urban Farm.

Sowing Seeds of Change has partnered with a Long Beach neighborhood non-profit, Willmore City Heritage Association, to provide our community with the EcoHarvest Festival, a unique one-of-a-kind event.

The goal of this event is to create meaningful connections, build community through family friendly activities, educate our community on urban farming practices, improve access to healthy food, connect residents to city services and programs, and provide children with school supplies & healthy food.

The event will be free and open to the public. There will be sustainable children activities (face painting, pumpkin succulent plantings, harvest flower crowns, fruit garlands, and more), local community resources, totes of school supplies for children to take home, complimentary lunch, a farmers market stand with fruits and vegetables for families to take home, a clothing swap, entertainment, and more.

Recycling Tip

Packages piling up? Please flatten those boxes! Flattening your boxes allows for more recyclables in your cart and in the truck, and it ensures smooth sorting at the Materials Recovery Facility.

FAQ

When will Long Beach residents get green carts?

The City is working to develop a residential organics program, but like many other cities in the state, we are dealing with lack of access to supplies needed to implement the program. We do not have a timeline to share at this time but are diligently working to overcome these obstacles.

Read more green cart FAQs here.

Can I recycle plastic numbers 1, 2 or 5?

We recycle by container, not number!

The number with a chasing arrows symbol does not determine the recyclability of a product. This plastic resin code only tells you the type of plastic it is made from.

In Long Beach, we recycle by type of container. When it comes to plastics, we only accept bottles, jugs, and tubs.
