The First Word 08.31.2024

The month of August was very active for ACEC OKLAHOMA! Fortunately working with Director Gatz we have confirmed our speakers for the annual Partnering Conference—Lt Governor Pinell and Representative Nicole Miller! Both great Oklahomans! If you have not registered there is still time---see below for more information.

The quarterly membership meeting was very well attended—thank you for your participation and if you signed in Evan sent out 1 hour of PDH for your participation. Debbie Miller with the City of OKC did any excellent job with her presentation and thank you to our members for asking some very important and relevant questions.

Our Emerging Leaders Program (former Leadership for Engineers) kicked off last month in Tulsa and we have an outstanding group! Usually we have 15 registered however due to high demand we have 18 for this class of future leaders. This month we will be in OKC and Stillwater for October.

Now that the Run-Off elections are settled and the focus will move towards general elections, interim studies, potential changes to committee structures and chairmen/women in each legislative chamber.

The anti-incumbent sentiment remains in the Republican party. All 3 incumbents on the ballot lost. Kevin Wallace—Chairman of the powerful House appropriations committee, Senator “Cowboy” Blake Stephens and Rep Dean Davis.

·        Tuesday 10 primary runoff elections were to decide the Republican nominee in the districts' races or determined which Republican would win the seat.

·        House Appropriations and Budget Chair Wallace, R-Wellston, received 45.65 percent of the primary runoff votes to Jim Shaw's 54.35 percent, ending his bid for a sixth and final term to represent House District 32. With no Democrats or Independents in the race, Shaw will take the seat.

·        In the House District 98 runoff, Gabe Wooley defeated Rep. Dean Davis, R-Broken Arrow. Wooley received 50.56 percent of the ballots to Davis' 49.44 percent, a difference of 28 votes. Wooley will face Cathy Smythe, a Democrat in the general election.

·        Julie McIntosh received 60.75 percent of the ballots in the Senate District 3 race to best Stephens, R-Tahlequah. McIntosh will face Margaret Cook, an Independent, in November's general election.

·        In the House District 20 race, Johnathan Wilk received 50.03 percent of the votes to Mike Whaley's 49.97 percent, a difference of two votes, to capture the Republican nomination. Wilk will face Mitchell Jacob, a Democrat in the general election. Rep. Sherrie Conley, R-Newcastle, did not seek reelection. This election will likely have a recount.

·        Stacy Jo Adams won the House District 50 seat by defeating Andew Andrew Aldridge, 61.71 percent to 38.29 percent. No Democrats or Independents filed in the face. Rep. Marcus McEntire, R-Duncan, did not seek reelection.

·        In the House District 53 runoff, Jason Blair defeated Nick Pokorny. Blair received 62.45 percent to Pokorny's 37.55 percent and will claim the seat. Rep. Mark McBride, R-Moore, is term limited and could not seek reelection.

·        Mike Kelly received 64.77 percent to, Ron Lynch's 32.53 percent to win the House District 60 seat being vacated by Rep. Rhonda Baker, R-Yukon.

·        Lisa Standridge defeated Robert Keyes, 50.51 percent to 49.49 percent, difference of 51 votes, to claim the Senate District 15 nomination. Standridge will face Elizabeth Foreman, a Democrat, in the general election. Sen. Robert Standridge, R-Norman, and Lisa Standridge's husband, currently holds the seat.

·        In Senate District 33 - Christi Gillespie defeated Shelley Gwartney. Gillespie faces Democratic candidate Bob Willis in the general election. Sen. Nathan Dahm, R-Broken Arrow, is term limited and could not seek reelection.

·        Kelley Hines received 60.31 percent of runoff ballots to Jenni Schmitt's 39.69 percent in the Senate District 47 race. Hines will face Erin Brewer, a Democrat in the general election. The seat currently is held by Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Treat, R-Oklahoma City, who could not seek reelection due to term limits. Gov Stitt and Sen Lankford endorsed Schmitt.

ACEC Women's Leadership Forum in Denver

Join us in Denver on September 22-23 for ACEC’s Women’s Leadership Forum. Targeted toward women ascending to leadership roles, the Forum will offer actionable ways to remove professional roadblocks and pave the way for more diverse and inclusive leadership in the engineering industry.

ACEC CEO Linda Bauer Darr will moderate a panel of women leaders of A/E firms, focusing on their professional journeys and gain their perspectives on where the engineering industry is headed in the coming years. We’ll also hear from the ACEC Research Institute on our Diversity Roadmap, launched last year to help our member firms reach their equity and inclusion goals.

The Forum also will include a workshop on effective communication, which is crucial for managers and leaders. This workshop is an opportunity to sharpen a skill that I believe will become an even greater competitive advantage than it already is. In a world – and an industry – becoming more driven by technology every day, it’s a paradoxical truth that the more technology replaces humans, the more “human” we will need to be.
