Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned to occur in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers should expect potential delays when traveling in this area and should visit 511virginia.org for real-time information on work zones and lane closures. All work is subject to change based on weather and other factors.

Single right lane closure on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for drainage, sound wall, embankment, and excavation work.


Monday, November 6, through Friday, November 10, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Alternating single mobile lane closures on northbound I-495 throughout the project corridor as needed for maintenance work and traffic management.

Single right lane closure on southbound I-495 between Georgetown Pike and Dulles Toll Road for drainage, excavation, embankment, and sound wall work.


Monday, November 6, Tuesday, November 7, and Thursday, November 9, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Double right lane closures on southbound I-495 at the Scott's Run bridge for demolition work and overhead sign removal.


Monday, November 6, through Friday, November 10, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Alternating single mobile lane closures on southbound I-495 throughout the project corridor as needed for maintenance work and traffic management.


Wednesday, November 8, through Thursday, November 9, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Single left lane closure on the ramp from southbound I-495 to Georgetown Pike for construction entrance work.


Thursday, November 9, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single right lane closure on the southbound collector/distributor road exit to George Washington Memorial Parkway (exit 43) for overhead sign removal. There may be brief total traffic stoppages during this time.


Friday, November 10, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Alternating single mobile lane closures on southbound I-495 throughout the project corridor as needed for maintenance work and traffic management.

LIVE OAK DRIVE


Monday, November 6, and Wednesday, November 8, through Friday, November 10, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Live Oak Drive will be reduced to a single lane near the swim club and bridge for waterline work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

GEORGETOWN PIKE INTERCHANGE


Monday, November 6, and Wednesday, November 8, through Friday, November 10, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single right lane closure on westbound Georgetown Pike on the bridge over I-495 for bridge abutment work.

OLD DOMINION DRIVE


Monday, November 6, and Wednesday, November 8, through Friday, November 10, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Old Dominion Drive will be reduced to a single lane for hauling work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE 


Wednesday, November 8, and Thursday, November 9, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The ramp from the eastbound Dulles Toll Road/Airport Access Road (Route 267) to northbound I-495 will be closed during overnight hours for beam setting. Motorists should follow the posted detour. This work may be shifted or extended to Friday, November 10, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Saturday, November 11, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Learn more about the work and detour here.


Dulles Toll Road


Monday, November 6, through Thursday, November 9, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left lane closure on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) near the I-495 interchange for drainage, embankment, and bridge work.


Tuesday, November 7, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single right lane closure on eastbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) at the I-495 interchange for materials delivery.


Dulles Access Road


Wednesday, November 8, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Single left lane closure on eastbound Dulles Access Road (Dulles Airport Access Highway) from Route 7 to Spring Hill Road for test bore work.

Traffic Changes

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road


Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange. George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495


Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project. Learn more about the traffic change here.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.


Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scotts Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge. 

 

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
