The Ally: Every Parent's Voice Can Make a Difference

Sometimes things hit me as we put together The Ally. Today I was so struck by what a difference every parent's voice makes.

Last week's Ninth Annual Special Education Law Conference, sponsored by the Mississippi Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities, was encouraging and empowering. We appreciate Attorney and parent Diana Autin reminding us of our options when special education disputes with school districts arise and that Mississippians don't use these options as much as other states do. We can use what we already have. We can make a difference.

I'm glad that the federal agency that runs Medicaid seems to be making real moves to get more input from people who receive Medicaid and for that input to make a difference in the lives of real people in every state. It can make a difference in Mississippi too. Parents and others can be at decision-making and policy tables. I feel certain.

I am touched and thankful that the Child Welfare League of America is asking Black birth mothers to share their experiences about the child welfare system. That could make a big difference in what happens to many families. It could make a difference for our children right here in Mississippi.

Every parent's voice can make a difference. So can yours. I hope as you look through The Ally, you will find ways you want to use your voice to make a difference.

July 20th at noon CDT is our Virtual: Bring Your IEP and Other School Questions. All families with school questions are welcome.
