Hello SSEF Families, Alumni & Friends,
|
|
The Snowbasin Sports Education Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors – composed of parents and community members. We recently elected two new members to the Board of Directors, to fill seats vacated by members who departed mid-term. Please join us in welcoming Jennifer Middleton and Chris Needham to the SSEF board. Together, they bring a wealth of experience from elite level athletics (Chris) and community engagement and fundraising (Jen). We are thrilled they are willing to serve our program with their knowledge and expertise. All voting seats on the foundation board are now filled, but we are always in need of committee members to support the work of the board. To get involved or learn more, you can join us for our upcoming board meeting on Feb 15th or email us: jen@snowbasinskiteam.org or matthew@snowbasinskiteam.org
We are in full swing of our competitive season and in full swing of our foundation’s fundraising season. The Board of Directors is thrilled to share that we recently received grants from the Community Foundation of Ogden Valley, the Allen Foundation, McCarthey Foundation and Helen and Jeff Cardon. Thanks to the incredible generosity from these organizations, we are able to purchase much needed safety equipment for our alpine and freeride teams, invest in coach education and training, and support the growing need for scholarship funds for athletes pursuing advanced training and competition. Our program would not be possible without the passionate generosity of our community members. The long-term success of our program is dependent on building a robust operating endowment to support ongoing operations and relieve pressure on athlete tuition. If you are interested in learning more about making a multi-year or planned gift to SSEF, please reach out to jen@snowbasinskiteam.org.
If you or your employer would like to support SSEF’s mission and have your logo on next year’s team gear, we have a limited number of 2024-25 apparel sponsorship opportunities remaining, the deadline for these opportunities is March 1, 2024 connect with matthew@snowbasinskiteam.org for more information.

The Snowbasin Ski Team athletes have shown their dedication and commitment in the first qualifying races for the Youth Ski League, South Series, U14s, U16s and U18s. The coaching staff, parents, and fellow teammates have been a great support system for these athletes who have been working hard to improve themselves. In the heart of our ski racing season, the team is focusing on the little things that matter, including mindset, rest, nutrition, hydration, and ski tuning. The team is also emphasizing the importance of helping each other out and self-reflecting on drills to strive for mastery. The Alpine Training System recommends 50-80% coached freeskiing and drills for the development phases of their age groups, and the team plans to take advantage of powder days to focus on proper form, increase endurance and overall balance. Congratulations to the Snowbasin Ski Team athletes for their impressive performance in these qualifying races, and we look forward to seeing their continued success this season.

Junior Bounous has been a legend in the American West ski community for almost 80 years. Hired as Alf Engen's assistant at Alta in 1948, Junior helped develop modern powder skiing techniques, alongside other innovators like Jim McConkey, Jim Shane, and Keith Lange, and was a founding member of the PSIA.
When Snowbird was first being designed, Dick Bass hired Junior to lay out all the new ski trails, and in 1971 he became the Ski School Director there. In the 1990s Junior became Snowbird's Director of Skiing until he retired at 90 years old !
Junior was inducted into the National Ski Hall of Fame in 1996, and the Intermountain Ski Hall of Fame in 2002 (the same year he carried the Olympic Torch in the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics). To celebrate his 80th Birthday, he skied Snowbird's treacherous Pipeline Chute, a couloir lined with jagged rocks and no room for error. Currently 98 years old and still skiing, Junior holds the Guinness World Record for the world's oldest Heli-Skier at 95 y
ears old, he skied 101 days when he was 96 years old, and still shreds powder.
About the writer: Ayja Bounous (Junior's granddaughter) grew up at the base of Little Cottonwood Canyon and spent her adolescence developing a love for the landscapes of the American West. This is her second book - Junior Bounous and the Joys of Skiing – and has received a Baldur Award from the International Skiing History Association.
