BEE FRIENDLY GREEN INITIATIVES

Bee Friendly Monthly Tip

Fall Harvests And Preparations For Winter

Did you know... fruits and vegetables that are harvested from Denver Golf's gardens are donated to local food banks every season. We donate 100s of pounds of vegetables back to the community every year.

It’s that time of year again! Final harvest and Winter prep for most gardens. We had an extended summer this year so some of our September tasks have been pushed a bit later than usual.

Out on the golf courses we have finished aerating the greens and fairways to reduce compaction and make room for fall root growth and water infiltration.  In the gardens, we are starting to do some cut backs (pruning) on perennial plants and flowers. Also checking the beehives for excess honey and then treating for mites and planning for winterization. We are starting pilot projects for wildflower plantings and planning for expansions.

Homeowner Tip: At home, the name of the game is preparation. It is a great time to plan to blow out your irrigation systems by yourself or hire a professional. Make sure you don’t wait till the last minute on that and be sure to water heavy before you turn everything off for the year to achieve some good soil moisture to get your plants through the late fall.

Late season harvests can be large and overwhelming. Make sure you have plenty of mason jars on hand for preservation of your delicious treats. Canning, pickling and fermenting are great ways to preserve your harvest long term. Also, don’t forget fall crop plantings such as garlic and cover crops to protect your soil and retain moisture through the winter! It’s also a great time to meet your neighbors and share your abundant harvest.

COURSE IMPROVEMENTS

This winter City Park will be starting to install a tee to green cart path on hole 13. This will help create a more favorable playing surface by reducing turf wear and tear from heavy cart traffic where the fairway narrows. opy here.Be
