2023 Sculpture Walk & Members and Volunteers Reception

August 19th and 20th provided perfect weather for our third Sculpture Walk and second Members and Volunteers Reception. During the day visitors enjoyed viewing over 20 small sculptures, chatting with the artists, and watching a hand-carving demonstration. For the first time, the Northwest Perennial Alliance included the Arboretum on its open garden list, bringing new visitors to the event. The sculptors sold six pieces, an improvement over previous years. On Saturday evening, members, volunteers, and sculptors enjoyed hearty appetizers, drinks, and music in a beautiful setting.

An event like this takes a lot of work, from getting the publicity out to post-event clean-up. Thanks to the Board members and volunteers who made this weekend such a success. A special thank you to Board member Jeanne Crisp, who once again organized the reception, from menu planning, shopping and cooking to clean-up. Not much food was left at the end of the evening!

Meet Eric Mowery, our new Board Member

I am so excited to be joining the Arboretum board! Raised on a farm in eastern WA, I had a Seattle landscaping business through my 20s. I moved up to the Everett area three years ago, and volunteering in the Arboretum has helped me connect more with Everett as a newcomer. I have really enjoyed volunteering Saturdays in the Arboretum, and I enjoy seeing it being used by all sorts of people and look forward to helping contribute to its continued success. I have paid my bills by being a software engineer the last 20 years, but my passion is being out in my yard gardening and making a welcoming space for the native birds, hummingbirds and occasionally an owl or two.
New Tribute Trees in the Maple Grove, One Pile of Dirt Gone

Maple Grove curator Trevor Cameron got busy this week. In addition to spreading the last of what was once about 20 yards of soil that has been gradually dispersed throughout the Maple Grove, Trevor planted two new trees--a Red Lion Maple and a cloud pruned mugo pine called Palouse.

Both are tribute trees, purchased in memory of a loved one. We have expanded our tribute tree options to include existing trees in the Arboretum as well as new trees that will be added as we proceed with the renovation of the Backyard Garden. If you have a favorite tree and would like to make it a tribute donation, or if you're interested in seeing the list of trees for the new garden, please click on the button below.
Docent Tour in August

Arboretum docent John Marsh led a group of friends from the Eastside Women's Club on a tour of the gardens in late August. The women made the trip to Everett to visit the Arboretum and enjoy lunch at Hotel Indigo.

These tours are rewarding for the docent, the visitors, and the Arboretum. We are in need of a few new docents. You don't have to be a plant expert. We'll train you and schedule your first few tours with a more experienced docent to build up your confidence. If you think you might like to give our docent training program a try, please send us an email at contactus@evergreenarboretum.com.
September Class: Meet Our Garden Curators: Get your gardening questions answered by our experts

This free class is from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 16th in the Arboretum. No pre-registration is required. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and ask questions of the Arboretum's garden curators. Whatever your level of gardening expertise, if you have a burning question about plant care, sustainable gardening practices, or garden design, our curators will be there to provide the answers you seek.

In addition to native plant curator Hap Wertheimer, pictured here, Trevor Cameron, Marylou Hart, Ted and Sandy Milam, Robert Christensen, and Dee Drake will be there to answer your gardening questions.
Donate Planters & Hanging Baskets:
Help us get a head start on the 2024 Plant Sale

We're already making plans for the 2024 plant sale. If you have decorative planters taking up too much space, consider donating them to EA&G. Whether they're small or large, whimsical or plain, we have volunteers willing to plant them up for sale next year. We're also happy to take any hanging baskets that you'd like to bring in. Our 2023 plant sale volunteers planted a number of hanging baskets and containers with colorful annuals--and every single one sold. We want to do that again! You can help us grow this part of the sale by cleaning off your shelves and contributing those old containers to the Arboretum.

You can bring your donations any time. Just leave them in the empty planting bed in the plant sale area or on the ramp to the Classroom Building door. All proceeds go into the Arboretum.
Work Parties Continue:
The weeds continue to grow and plant sale preparation begins in September

Join us on Wednesday, September 6 beginning at 10 a.m. for our regular first Wednesday work party. Come dressed for the weather, bring your own gloves and tools or borrow ours, and be sure to carry a water bottle.

On Thursday, September 21st, starting at 9:30 a.m., our plant sale work parties begin for the fall season.
The Backyard Garden: patio and benches completed

Edge Concrete completed the patio project just in time for Sculpture Walk. The sculptors took advantage of the new feature to display their work during the event, and members and volunteers got a look at this impressive addition to the Arboretum.

In September we plan to address the drainage issues that plague this area. Then the Parks Department will work on the irrigation system and realign and re-surface the pathways. There's still a lot of dirt to look at, but once the rain returns, we will begin replanting.

And yes, we are still in need of donations. One of the benches around the patio is available as a tribute for $3,000, and we will need help to purchase the many trees and shrubs planned for the garden.
Calling Artists, Birdlovers, Crafters, Architects...
Interested in creating a one-of-a-kind home for birds?

As part of our 6oth anniversary celebrations, we are holding a birdhouse contest. The contest, For the Birds, will culminate on December 2 with a display of all entries and a live auction in Legion Hall. This is a fundraiser for our Backyard Garden project, and the winning entry will be displayed in the renovated garden for all to enjoy.

"For the Birds" provides an opportunity for you to exercise your creativity, help us raise money for the Backyard Garden, and maybe buy a unique holiday present for someone on your gift list.
Artist Opportunity for Wintertide Lights 2023

Help us light up the gazebo for the month of December. EA&G is seeking proposals for a lighted sculpture to hang from the ceiling of the gazebo during Wintertide Lights 2023.

Proposals are due by September 16. The winning artist will have until late November to complete the project.
