IN THE ZONE

Greetings,

Welcome to the August edition of In the Zone, the official newsletter of the GMFTZ. There is no doubt GMFTZ is hot this summer as Zone 277 continues to be one of the most active FTZ’s in the nation.

Members of the GMFTZ Board and I had the pleasure of meeting with Jason West, Assistant Port Director for the Port of Phoenix recently. The Port of Phoenix is overseen by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), a parent agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). CBP’s priority mission is to prevent terrorists and terrorist weapons from entering the United States and ensuring the security of our nation at America's borders and ports of entry.

The Port of Phoenix serves as the official entry point for the GMFTZ. Jason and the Port of Phoenix team, lead by Director Chris Leon, are responsible for overseeing activity in the Greater Phoenix area, including GMFTZ. We were pleased to hear very positive feedback from CBP regarding compliance within the Zone. The Zone’s successful operations can be largely attributed to GMFTZ’s newly inked agreement with WESTMARC to manage the Zone’s day-to-day administration functions. GMFTZ and WESTMARC remain committed to operational excellence and to maintaining the highest degree of transparency among West Valley stakeholders.

We look forward to continuing to grow the GMFTZ and to supporting economic growth in the West Valley.

Sincerely,

Allison Grigg

President

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

A successful workforce development strategy emphasizes abundant and diverse education and training programs to meet the needs of growing and targeted industry sectors, from pre-K through K-12, post-secondary and adult education through on-the-job training.

While the West Valley is the fastest growing region in one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, it is equally important that we retain the talent that we grow and attract by providing the quality of life amenities that our residents want and demand. And increasingly, site selectors and businesses investigating areas to locate say that a region’s quality of life is a critical factor in their decision. These quality of life amenities include:

  • Having a diverse portfolio of housing options across a range of household incomes
  • The availability of affordable child care
  • A strong and vibrant education system
  • Adequate transportation modes to bring workers to where the jobs are at the schedules that businesses need them
  • Arts, entertainment, and recreation opportunities that provide a balance of life
  • Abundant and diverse retail and restaurant options

WESTMARC and the West Valley communities agree, which is why, in partnership with the Center for the Future of Arizona, we track these critical amenities and more with our Quality of Life Wheel. And because these are so important to workforce development, they will be incorporated with specific goals into the West Valley Regional Workforce Development Strategy / West Valley Pipeline 2.0.
