In Advent, we enter a special season of hope, expectation, and anticipation as we relive through scripture the events leading up to our Saviour's birth. We also prepare our hearts for His second coming at the end of time.
The lighting of Advent candles reminds us that no matter what happens in the world or in the Church, we always have cause for joyful hope because the One in whom we have placed our trust is completely trustworthy; His light can never be extinguished and His promises are never broken. Hope leads us to “desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit” (CCC 1817).
By preparing for the anniversary of Our Lord's birth, we quietly and humbly make room for Him in our hearts once again, knowing that He is graciously preparing for us an eternal home of indescribable beauty deep within His Sacred Heart. "In my Father's house there are many mansions. If not, I would have told you: because I go to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2)
St. Paul exhorts us to "be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer" (Romans 12:12). May the grace of the Holy Spirit help us to be patient and faithful as we look forward with joyful hope and eager hearts to the fulfillment of all Our Lord's promises!
